Position Summary
The Lab Animal Care technician II follows established practices and procedures in an AAALAC accredited Non- Human Primate facility at the University of Georgia campus, to perform all aspects of routine animal care and husbandry in ABSL-1 and ABSL-2 environments. This position reports directly to the NHP Facility Manager and Husbandry Coordinator.
Duties include but are not limited to: wear personal protective equipment: Tyvek suits, safety glasses, face shields, safety shoes/boots, respirators, gloves. Sanitation duties: cleaning cages, animal rooms and ancillary areas. Operate mechanical cage washers, pressure washers and other animal care equipment. Daily care and husbandry activities: Feeding, watering, prepares fresh fruit and vegetables. Observes animals daily for signs of sickness, behavioral changes and overall health status. Participate in NHP enrichment programs and in the positive reinforcement training on NHP. Follows well-established schedules and standard operating procedures. Maintains daily logs and records and performs other duties as assigned by supervisor. All duties assigned will follow established Standard Operating Procedures. Incumbents will work rotating schedule including weekends and holidays. Participation in UGA's Occupational Health & Safety Program is necessary and may include vaccinations, and respirator fit testing. Participates in staff meetings, continuing education, and training classes as directed.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies
Be comfortable handling and caring for non-human primates. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, ability to communicate effectively with co-workers and Veterinarians in a professional and courteous manner, facilitate problem resolution, and promote excellent customer service. Involves initiative and flexibility. Excellent observation skills. Ability to understand and follow written Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and verbal instructions. Involves participation in the research occupational health and safety program which may include specific vaccinations before entering restricted facilities.
Ability to use computer software, including but not limited to MS Word & Excel, Outlook email and calendars, and Adobe Acrobat. Ability to use computer software to record data.
Physical Demands
This position involves potential exposure to biohazards and involve following established safety procedures. Participation in the research occupational health and safety program which may include specific vaccinations before entering restricted facilities. Sustained periods of physical activity such as standing, bending, stooping, reaching above shoulder level and lift 50 pounds. Squatting, kneeling, reaching overhead, walk on stairs. Work sometimes under demanding conditions (high humidity, unpleasant odors, animal excreta and noise). Stand on hard surfaces for prolonged periods of time. Work may be physically demanding involving the transport, relocation and positioning of animal care and auxiliary equipment. Working in an enclosed environment exposed to smells, dust and dander of animals. Work in Personnel Protective Equipment ( PPE) that includes: safety glasses, face shields, safety shoes/boots, respirators, gloves, Tyvek.

Duties/Responsibilities
Performs daily animal care and husbandry duties for animals in NHP facility; including feeding, food preparation, cleans and sanitizes animal rooms, ancillary areas, primary enclosures following established procedures and schedules. Animal health checks, cage changing, providing enrichment and environmental monitoring. Assures animals are appropriately maintained and cared for in accordance with standard operating procedures and supervisor's instructions.

Participates in mandatory training classes as assigned and participates in UGA Occupational Health & Safety program. Participates in continuing education training and staff meetings.
