Position description

The UC Davis School of Medicine Dean's Office is recruiting for an Executive Associate Dean. The Executive Associate Dean reports to the Dean of the School of Medicine (SOM) and serves the SOM on the Sacramento and Davis campuses. This role supports the Dean in executing academic, clinical, and research goals while ensuring operational efficiency. The Executive Associate Dean coordinates across departments, faculty, and constituents to enhance educational programs, clinical operations, faculty development, and research initiatives. This position serves in the capacity of the Dean in his/her absence, serves as the Dean's representative, and is a key member of the Dean's leadership team.

The incumbent will have up to 25% effort in administrative responsibilities as Executive Associate Dean, while maintaining up to 75% effort and responsibilities in research, clinical, and/or teaching duties as a full-time faculty member in an Academic Senate series (Regular, In Residence, Clinical X) at the Full Professor level in the appropriate academic department in the UC Davis School of Medicine. This is not a change in title opportunity.

Responsibilities

* Leadership to ensure the responsible use of all School of Medicine, Health System, and University resources to optimally support the institution's missions.

* Interact regularly with other administrative leadership in the Health System, SOM, and UC Davis to ensure the coordination of administrative decisions with the larger organization.

* Provide leadership and mentorship to various administrative, academic, and technical professionals in the School of Medicine.

* Collaborate on long-term planning related to financial sustainability, faculty recruitment, infrastructure, and program development.

* In partnership with the Executive Assistant Dean and other SOM leadership, provide leadership of administrative and financial operations, including budgeting and resource allocation.

* Collaborate on a strategic FTE allocation and prioritization to achieve the School's academic and clinical goals

* Support development activities to enhance fundraising and ensure appropriate stewardship of donated funds.

* Work to enhance the sense of community among our faculty and researchers, focusing on communication with our internal audience.

* Collaborate closely with other Vice and Associate Deans and Department Chairs to offer comprehensive mentorship for faculty.

* Cultivate academic partnerships and collaborations with other UC Davis units with academic and nonacademic entities outside the University.

* Support an academic environment that stimulates faculty development. Interact with campus partners and other partner organizations to implement high-quality faculty development opportunities.

* Advance our culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion that reinforces our aspirational goals of equity in all aspects of education, science, and healthcare.

As an academic faculty member, responsibilities include clinical service, in applicable area of specialty; teaching of medical students, residents, and fellows; conducting and producing scholarly work, clinical/translational research; a record of peer-reviewed publications; success in obtaining extramural funding, as applicable; and University service. Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

  • An M.D., Ph.D., or M.D./Ph.D.
  • For MD applicants, board certification and fellowship training, as applicable to specialty and if subspecialty trained, and possess or be eligible for a California Medical License.
  • Qualification for the rank of full professor in the Regular (Ladder-Rank), In Residence, or Clinical X series at the University of California.
  • Extensive leadership experience in medical education, research, and/or clinical operations within an academic institution.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex organizations and large teams.
  • A track record of supporting collaboration across departments or divisions to unit diverse constituents around a shared vision.
  • A track record of working in a matrixed organization.
  • Proven financial management skills; the ability to advocate on behalf of the financial needs of a unit, to oversee complex budgets, and make difficult decisions regarding financial priorities.
  • Successful experience mentoring: someone who feels comfortable showcasing the talents of others, and who can recognize high-potential individuals and develop this talent.
  • Deep commitment to developing a professional environment that supports equity, diversity, and inclusion.
  • A collaborative and communicative leadership style, outstanding interpersonal skills, integrity, warmth, good humor, and a high energy level.
