DESCRIPTION OF WORK

The PA State Archives strives to collect, preserve, and make available collections of the Archives, both physical and digital. The Digital Outreach section of the PA State Archives manages the scanning program and maintains a variety of top-of-the-line specialty scanners. The prospective intern will be engaged in digitizing and then describing Archives collections. This internship will also include experience with audio visual description.

The intern will work with four professional Archivists throughout the course of the internship, alternating experiences every day. The projects will primarily include alternating between digitization of a variety of formats and description of digitized files. In one project, the intern will complete scanning for an ongoing project, the American Guide series, RG-13.108. The intern will learn how to manage digitization projects, gain knowledge of archival naming conventions, become versed in digital file formats, obtain proficiency in using digitization equipment and software, as well as develop skills for quality control. In another project, the intern will review, create metadata for, and describe motion picture films and other audio-visual items. Another project involves reviewing scans for quality and completing item level description metadata spreadsheets for upload to the Archives digital preservation system. The intern will shadow an Archivist and participate in the full lifecycle of a digital record, completing work from scan, to description, ingest, preservation, and access.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • 10-week internship, May 2025 through August 2025, approximately 225 to 300 hours
  • Work hours are flexible and will be finalized between the selected intern and their supervisor
  • Salary: $17.00 per hour

QUALIFICATIONS

Internship Requirements:

  • All applicants must be enrolled at a college or university in an undergraduate or graduate program at the time of their internship.

Additional Requirements:

  • You must be able and willing to report to Harrisburg, PA during the Summer Keystone Internship dates, which will be a 10-week period between of May 12, 2025 and August 22, 2025.
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.

Preferred Qualifications (not required):

  • Currently majoring, minoring, or have a concentration in Archival Studies, History, Public History, or Library and Information Sciences.
  • Work, academic, or volunteer experience that has prepared you for this internship
  • An understanding of how this internship will help you meet your academic and/or career goals
