Summary

The duties and responsibilities of Mechanic-A are to maintain the Astoria 500 MW Combined Cycle Plant and associated equipment to meet availability, generation, and plant heat rate requirements by prudent maintenance practices.

Responsibilities

In this position you will maintain the Astoria 500 MW Combined Cycle Plant equipment while working in a professional, team oriented, multi-disciplined environment to meet plant availability, reliability and power generation of the facility. You will be responsible for maintaining all plant components including but not limited to gas and steam turbines, heat recovery steam generators, environmental control systems, cooling tower equipment, boiler feed, condensate, and balance of plant equipment. This position requires working 40 hours a week, Monday to Friday and overtime as necessary.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Experience in troubleshooting and correcting mechanical problems which include pumps, motors, valves and other rotating equipment.
  • Troubleshooting and correcting mechanical maintenance problems, including pumps, valves, piping, and other mechanical components of the power generation system.
  • Must possess valid driver's license, reliable transportation.
  • Knowledge of general maintenance skills, tools, practices.
  • Ability to continuously learn and adapt to change.
  • Ability to work well under pressure, remain focused and calm in the face of distractions.
  • Good computer skills.
  • Attention to details and strong organizational skills.
  • Possess high safety and environmental awareness.
  • Team player who is also capable of working with minimal supervision.
  • Capable of safely rigging and moving some heavy equipment components

Additional desired skills:

  • HVAC troubleshooting and maintenance.
  • Excellent understanding of hydraulics, pneumatics, combustion, electrical and mechanical maintenance.
  • Excellent math, reading, and blueprint reading skills.
Education, Experience and Certifications

Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Associate or bachelor's degree in engineering or related field is preferred.

Experience:

  • Required - Minimum 2 years of experience working in an industrial or power plant environment in a Technical/equipment maintenance role.
Physical Requirements
  • Requires standing, sitting, walking, kneeling, twisting, climbing stairs and ladders, and entering plant equipment to access, inspect, or collect data on plant equipment.
  • Requires wearing personal protective safety equipment (safety glasses, hard hat, appropriate footwear, ear plugs, fall protection, respirators, etc...).
  • Requires working around rotating and energized equipment, in outdoor conditions, confined spaces, hazardous materials and chemicals and loud noise.
  • Occasionally requires lifting 50 pounds or greater as appropriate to perform duties and responsibilities.
  • The incumbent will be on call 24 hours a day and may be required to work irregular hours when needed, as per union contract.
  • Will be issued a cell/mobile phone and required to be answered as per the union contract.

Hourly rates for union-represented employees are collectively bargained by the New York Power Authority and UWUA. The negotiated pay rate for this position from $40.99 to $52.38 per hour.
