Berkeley Lab is seeking a visionary Production/Manufacturing Engineering Department Head to become a critical member of our mission-driven Engineering Division. - Lead technical and operational efforts for the department's projects and programs, managing 20-30 staff, including engineers, technicians, and students.
- Lead a department whose mission is the coordination of scientific components, assemblies and equipment, and the coordination of the installation and integration of these into scientific facilities.
- Drive the strategic direction for project management, manufacturing, and fabrication processes, incorporating input from stakeholders.
- Strengthen and consistently implement the division's technical Quality Assurance and representative programs in collaboration with the CAD department.
- Oversee management & coordination of vendors, contractors, timelines, lead times of critical components.
- Collaborate with the Operations Deputy to optimize budget, workforce planning, HR, safety, and facilities management.
- Serve as the primary contact for mechanical engineering-related challenges with partner divisions.
- Build strong partnerships with external stakeholders, including Facilities and Project Infrastructure Management, for large-scale installations and Building Integrated Modeling (BIM) initiatives.
- Work with the Engineering Division Director and other department heads to align on strategic goals.
- Support the Engineering Division Director and Lab Chief Engineer in developing cross-lab engineering frameworks and processes.
- Set strategic direction for the Manufacturing Department to meet future needs of the Engineering Division.
- Address management and resource challenges, guiding strategies for hiring, retaining, and developing a diverse workforce.
- Promote a culture of diversity, inclusion, equity, and accountability through best practices in recruitment, staff engagement, and recognition.
- Collaborate with Engineering Division management, HR, and stakeholders to assess and update job classifications in line with LBNL requirements.
- Provide leadership, mentorship, and training to manufacturing engineering and technical professionals to support Berkeley Lab's science programs.
What is Required:
- Bachelor's or advanced degree in mechanical/electrical engineering or related field, with 10+ years of experience.
- Recognition as a subject matter expert (e.g., through national reviews, conference talks, or collaborations on major projects) of engineering principles in one or more of the following disciplines (mechanical, electrical, manufacturing, civil, etc.).
- Proven supervisory experience leading professionals and technical staff.
- Extensive experience managing engineering or scientific projects through to demonstration of their installed and integrated end products.
- Strong commitment to diversity, inclusion, equity, and accountability.
- Proven leadership in managing large, diverse, multidisciplinary teams of scientists and engineers through organizational changes, new technology, and shifts in strategy.
- Strong decision-making skills, balancing technical and business considerations.
- Skilled at managing multiple projects and priorities while maintaining high-quality standards.
- Strong project management expertise, including planning, budgeting, scheduling, and risk management with the ability to execute long-term strategies aligned with division and institutional goals.
- Expertise in quality assurance management, including testing, continuous improvement and integration management.
- Effective communicator, able to interact with diverse work groups and senior management, and represent the Lab externally.
- Ability to mentor, coach, and develop teams, promoting continuous learning and growth.
- Effective in preparing proposals and strategically communicating with partners.
Desired Qualifications:
- Proven technical project management experience, preferably in National Labs, Research Labs, or DOE projects (413.3B).
- Familiarity with working in a union environment.
- Advanced degree or equivalent experience.
- Management experience in technical organizations/R&D.

Salary: The expected salary for this position is $169,000.00 - $237,000.00, which fits into the full salary of $126,874.00 - $304,509.00 per month depending upon the candidate's skills, knowledge, and abilities, including education, certifications, and years of experience. Notes:
