Position Description:

INTERNAL SEARCH - ONLY CURRENT CARVER COLLEGE OF MEDICINE FACULTY ARE ELIGIBLE FOR CONSIDERATION.

BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY:

Serve as the Associate Dean for Medical Education Integration and Innovation initiatives in the Carver College of Medicine advising the Dean, Executive Dean, Associate Dean for Student Affairs and Curriculum, Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education, Associate Dean for Graduate Professional Programs, and other senior staff, regarding issues related to creating innovative and integrated medical education that bridges undergraduate medical education to graduate medical education and continuing medical education. This position will be responsible for overseeing systems that ensure educational teams are well positioned to address continuing accreditation including UME, GME, CME and undergraduate and graduate professional programs. Additionally, the Associate Dean for Medical Education Integration and Innovation will supervise the Assistant Dean for Access and Engagement who serves the breadth of learners in the Carver College of Medicine by developing programs that build cultural and global competency and prepares our learners to serve the breadth of patient populations they will encounter in their careers, while also infusing the principles of culture, community, and common ground into the learning environment in the Carver College of Medicine.





  • Create innovative educational programs that can advantage the breadth of undergraduate medical, graduate medical, and continuing medical education programs.
  • Develop strategies to enhance the educational culture within the Carver College of Medicine and UI Health Care, including creation of a Master Educator faculty program, and other initiatives that recognize exceptional teaching.
  • Coordinate and align activities within the continuum of Carver College of Medicine educational programs, including the Office of Research and Consultation in Medical Education, the Office of Student Affairs and Curriculum, the Graduate Medical Education Office, Division of Continuing Medical Education, and the Professional Medical Education programs (Master's in Clinical Nutrition, Master's in Clinical Laboratory Professionals, etc).
  • Develop and coordinate a framework for supporting accreditation activities for the breadth of educational programs in the Carver College of Medicine (LCME, ACGME, professional programs and others). Successful accreditation will require developing systems to track accreditation and coordinating with activities performed by the specific education teams.
  • Enhance the Carver College of Medicine's national visibility in educational innovation.
  • Supervise team members focused on operational and programmatic aspects of learner access and community development activities to ensure the Carver College of Medicine is providing a welcoming and respectful environment.
  • Advise DEOs, Deans, and Directors regarding educational activities and initiatives.
  • Ensure efforts are aligned with the Carver College of Medicine, UI Health Care, and the University of Iowa's Strategic Plans.
  • Serve on relevant university and collegiate committees.
  • Represent the college with local, state and nationalassociations and networks geared towards addressing medical education.
  • Prepare reports and proposals as requested by executive leadership of the college and university.
  • Participate in annual events including the White Coat Ceremony, Commencement, Investiture Ceremonies, Multicultural Graduation Recognition Banquet, and other ceremonial and celebratory events held during the academic year.




SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

Supervision is received from the Executive Dean. Effective collaboration with other Associate/Assistant Deans and DEOs is necessary on a regular basis.

SUPERVISION PROVIDED:

Supervision is provided to the Assistant Dean for Access and Engagement.

Education Requirement:


  • MD, MD/PhD or PhD is required.


Required Qualifications:


  • INTERNAL SEARCH - ONLY CURRENT CARVER COLLEGE OF MEDICINE FACULTY ARE ELIGIBLE FOR CONSIDERATION.
  • Experience serving as an educational leader in undergraduate, graduate, and continuing medical education activities.
  • Experience creating activities that bridge undergraduate, graduate, and/or continuing medical education.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize educational programs that integrate educational activities in multiple departments.
  • Strong understanding of education accreditation systems.
  • Track record of publications and national presentations that demonstrate excellence and innovation in medical education.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide leadership and act as a change agent and consensus builder.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience regarding effective strategies for working with faculty, staff, and students from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives.
  • Knowledge of principles and application of administrative, fiscal, and related faculty matters for institutions of higher education.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
  • Strong management and planning skills.
  • Significant experience with promoting a collaborative climate that recognizes, celebrates, and rewards education.


Desirable Qualifications:


  • Experience in obtaining external grant or philanthropic funding.
