Description

The Department of Music at Smith College invites applications for a tenured or tenure-track position in popular music, to begin July 2025. We seek an experienced scholar and teacher of popular music, broadly defined and open in terms of geography and genre emphasis. The successful candidate will have a record of publication commensurate with career stage, a commitment to undergraduate education, and be prepared to engage actively with diverse students across the liberal arts, including those with little background in music. Teaching responsibilities (normally 2-2) will regularly include courses in the successful candidate's areas of expertise and contributions to the Music department's core curriculum, including courses in cultural studies and writing about music. In addition, Smith faculty provide mentorship to students through advising, independent studies, and honors theses. There is significant opportunity for cross-listing courses with other departments/ programs and for collaborative work across the campus and the Five College consortium.

Smith faculty are expected to maintain an active program of research and scholarly publication. We encourage applications from interdisciplinary scholars, those whose work emphasizes issues of labor and class, race, and/or gender and sexuality, and those working in sound studies or disability studies. Service expectations include department and college governance. A Ph.D. is expected at the time of appointment.. Candidates from any discipline with relevant expertise and research programs are encouraged to apply.
