Scientific Director of Stem Cell Laboratory (Bone Marrow Transplant)

Position Summary

Responsible for the overall functioning and management operations of the Cryopreservation Stem Cell laboratory. Collaborates with the hospital labs and stem cell transplant teams for operational, quality assurance, and programmatic needs. Supervisory staffing responsibilities.


The duties of the Scientific Director of Stem Cell Laboratory may include the following but are not limited to:


  • Coordinate with Collection Facility (Apheresis and Bone Marrow) and the Clinical program for patients flow into the department
  • Coordination with floor nurses regarding thawing and infusion of bone marrow/stem cells
  • Daily coordination with Medical Director or his designee regarding orders for stem cell collection and infusion of cells
  • Works together with transplant coordinators to receive and process bone marrow/stem cells from outside registries
  • Works together with the clinical team to process, store, freeze and ship patient samples on research protocols
  • Train employees in the lab (Competency and certifications)
  • Secure and Maintain licenses and certificates of the lab from NYDOH, FDA and FACT
  • Oversees Laboratory Billing and Revenues
  • Manage Laboratory budget and purchases
  • Oversee daily operations of the laboratory (Cryopreservation and preparations for infusions)
  • Author SOPS, Policies and procedures and Quality Management Plans (along with QA Manager)
  • Perform Internal Audits and Validations and Process control
  • Reports to Medical director and appropriate committees on quality issues and Patient management
  • Facilitates research projects that pertain to cell therapy and transplant
  • Teaching responsibilities are expected (students, medical staff)


Qualifications

Required:


  • Medical degree, doctoral degree or equivalent degree in a relevant science or equivalent to MT (ASCP) certification.
  • Minimum of six years laboratory experience, of which two years to include stem cell management experience in stem cell and cord blood.
  • Minimum of two years' experience in a laboratory managerial/supervisory capacity.
  • Knowledge of evaluation methodologies, data analysis, i.e., statistics, QC/proficiency testing.
  • Demonstrated communication skills necessary to interact with all levels of hospital staff.


Preferred:


  • FACT Accreditation experience

  • Successfully complete pre-employment physical examination and obtain medical clearance from Stony Brook Medicine's Employee Health Services*
  • Complete electronic reference check with a minimum of three (3) professional references.
  • Successfully complete a 4 panel drug screen*
  • Meet Regulatory Requirements for pre-employment screenings.
  • Provide a copy of any required New York State license(s)/certificate(s).

*The hiring department will be responsible for any fee incurred for examination.

Anticipated Pay Range:

The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position is - $124000 - $170000/ year.

The above salary range represents SBUH's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. The specific salary offer will be based on the candidate's validated years of comparable experience. Any efforts to inflate or misrepresent experience are grounds for disqualification from the application process or termination of employment if hired.

Some positions offer annual supplemental pay such as:

* Location pay for UUP, CSEA & PEF full-time positions ($3400)
