Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in child development, early childhood education, or a related field; three to five years' experience in early childhood program management; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Supervisory experience in an educational setting preferred. Grant management experience desirable.

  • Must be Director I or II certified by the Department of Early Education and Care (EEC) within three months of hire.
  • Valid Massachusetts Driver's License, Class D
  • Certification in CPR and First Aid

Assistant Director of Early Childhood Education Job Description

PRIMARY PURPOSE

The purpose of this position is to perform complex administrative, professional, and supervisory work assisting in the development, implementation, and management of Brookline's early childhood education programs while maintaining the highest standards of education, safety, and overall program quality, in compliance with the Department of Early Education and Care (EEC) regulations. The Assistant Director will supervise program staff, participate in all work activities, and act as a liaison between parents, staff, and the Recreation Department; acts in place of the Director as required; performs all other related work.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assists the Director in planning, developing, and evaluating early childhood education programs, including curriculum, activities, and special events.
  • Oversees daily operations of all department Early Education Care (EEC) programs, ensuring that they are delivered in a safe and engaging manner.
  • Provides day-to-day supervision of full-time, part-time, and seasonal staff. Assists Director with all aspects of staff management and hiring, including but not limited to: recruitment, training, staffing, scheduling, professional development, and managing state regulations for licensed Early Childcare Group Programs.
  • Collaborates with Director to develop and implement staff training programs to ensure adherence to the highest standards of child care and education.
  • Oversees licensing of all department EEC certification, pre-K through school age and monitors program compliance with local and state regulations, including EEC health and safety standards.
  • Maintains effective communication with parents and guardians regarding children's progress, program updates, and any concerns.
  • Assists with budget preparation and management for the early childhood programs, ensuring cost-effective operation. Assists with grant applications and grant management.
  • Assists in administrative tasks, including registration, scheduling, maintaining accurate records of participant information, and ensuring timely billing.
  • Addresses and resolves any issues or complaints from staff, parents, or program participants in a professional and timely manner.
  • Collaborates with the Director to create program marketing strategies and ensure community engagement.
  • Actively participates in meetings, committees, and task forces that support early childhood education initiatives.
  • Act as Interim Director of Early Childhood Education in the event of the Director's extended absence.
  • Performs similar or related work as directed, required, or as situation dictates.


SUPERVISION

Supervision Scope: Performs a wide variety of duties of an administrative and operational nature requiring the exercise of judgement and initiative to assist in the management of the Early Education Center.

Supervision Received: Works under the general supervision of the Director of Early Childhood Education or Recreation Director/Assistant Director in their absence. Regularly exercises independent judgment in implementing policies and managing staff and programs. Resolves administrative and procedural problems independently, requesting assistance with unusual situations which do not have clear precedents.

SUPERVISION GIVEN: Supervises and provides direction to full-time, part-time, and seasonal staff involved in the delivery of early childhood education programs, ensuring the completion, quality and accuracy of work. Acts in place of the Director as needed.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is primarily performed in an office and classroom settings of a moderate noise level, with occasional outdoor activities and field trips; the work is subject to seasonal changes and requires planning; the employee may occasionally work weekends and evenings.

The employee operates standard office equipment, including a computer and copier; uses classroom, sports and other recreation equipment; operates a department van.

The employee has significant contact with young children, family members, other recreation staff and the general public. Regular contact with other town departments, agencies, Boards and Commissions, and outside organizations.

Errors could result in loss of accreditation, personal injury or injury to others, significant monetary loss or delay or loss of service.

RECOMMENDED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITY AND SKILL

Strong understanding of early childhood development and educational practices. Working knowledge and understanding of Massachusetts EEC regulations. Working knowledge of other local, state, and federal regulations governing child care and education programs. Some familiarity with budgeting, finance, and grant management desirable.

Ability to effectively engage with children, parents, and other staff. Demonstrated leadership and team management abilities. Ability to work collaboratively with program staff, volunteers, and other Town departments.

Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal. Excellent customer service and problem-solving skills. Skilled at teacher training and supervision. Strong organizational skills. Demonstrated technical and administrative skills, including using software for registration, billing, and scheduling.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Moderate physical effort is required. Ability to work in various environments, including classroom settings, playgrounds, and during outdoor activities. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, speak, hear, sit, use hands to operate equipment, and occasionally lift materials or children up to 30 pounds. Vision requirements include the ability to read routine documents, use a computer and operate a motor vehicle.
