Join our team! We provide quality, compassionate outpatient therapy care to adult men and women ages 18+. Our team is made up of licensed clinicians, psychiatrists, physicians, NPs and psychologists within our esteemed academic health system. The Licensed Behavioral Health Clinician provides assessment and direct support to individuals with mental, emotional, and behavioral challenges in all populations with a high emphasis on complex trauma, chronic comorbidities, geriatric, substance abuse, and grief patients. We offer our clinicians a yearly stipend toward licensing and CEUs! Our clinic hours are Monday-Friday 8am-5pm and no weekends, nights or holidays are required. This is a hybrid work opportunity (onsite/remote).

The Licensed Behavior Health Clinician-Adult is an independent licensed clinical social worker, professional counselor, psychologist, or clinical nurse specialist that will be responsible for providing outpatient therapy services within the Department of Psychiatry and/or other areas within the health system as needed.

Essential Job functions:

  • Provides initial evaluations and direct outpatient clinical services for the Department of Psychiatry for adults.

  • Provides psychotherapy to patients in conjunction with care provided by department psychiatrists, physicians, psychologists, and nurse practitioners.

  • Develops clinical treatment plans with patient input, understanding and agreement toward clearly stated goals.

  • Utilizes the most current diagnostic and statistics manual for mental health disorders to provide accurate diagnosis.

  • Completes clinical documentation noting progress toward treatment goals following each patient encounter.

  • Maintains compliance with all VCUHS policies and procedures governing clinical care delivery and documentation.

  • Collaborates as part of an interdisciplinary team to meet the needs of the patients served.

  • Facilitates patient referrals to other departmental resources or to community resources as appropriate.

  • Performs other duties as assigned and/or participates in special projects in order to support the mission of VCUHS and the Department.

  • Provides assistance to team members.

  • Accepts alternate assignments, as required, graciously.

Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide equitable care appropriate to the age of the patients served on their assigned unit.

Adults (18-64 years); Geriatrics (65 years and older)

Employment Qualifications:

Required Education:
Masters or Doctoral level education in the field of psychology, social work, counseling, or nursing from an accredited program

Licensed in the Commonwealth of Virginia as a Professional Counselor, Clinical Psychologist, Clinical Social Worker or Clinical Nurse Specialist

Minimum of three (3) years post licensure experience providing initial psychiatric evaluations and psychotherapy in an outpatient setting

Must be able to independently evaluate patients, formulate an accurate differential diagnosis, develop, and implement an appropriate course of treatment.

VCU Health's Cancer Survivorship Program is seeking a compassionate and dedicated Licensed Behavioral Health Clinician to address the increasing psychosocial needs of cancer survivors. This clinician will play a pivotal role in improving the overall well-being and quality of life for patients, many of whom are managing the complex challenges of cancer survivorship, including comorbid mental health conditions that significantly impact their physical health.

In this role, the clinician will provide initial psychosocial assessment, individual, group, and family therapy services to patients experiencing emotional distress, anxiety, depression, and other mental health concerns related to their diagnosis and treatment. They will collaborate with oncology care teams to develop holistic, patient-centered care plans, conduct psychosocial assessments, and implement tailored interventions to address the unique needs of cancer survivors. The clinician will also deliver evidence-based applicable interventions, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), or mindfulness practices, to support coping and resilience. Serving as a resource and advocate for patients and their families, facilitate connecting them to community resources, facilitate psychoeducation, and promote mental health education within the program.

Qualified candidates will have a master's degree in Social Work, Counseling, or a related field and hold an active licensure as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), or equivalent in Virginia. A minimum of two years of experience providing therapy in a medical or behavioral health setting is required. While not mandatory, experience working with oncology patients, knowledge of cancer survivorship issues, and familiarity with trauma-informed care and evidence-based therapeutic approaches are highly desirable.
