Job Summary

The Institute is committed to web and digital content accessibility for its students, faculty, staff, and visitors, and has launched an Institute-wide effort to ensure electronic content and resources are designed and deployed or procured to support this standard. The Web Accessibility Program Manager will oversee the Institute's work in this area, with responsibility for ensuring that Caltech websites, electronic communications, web applications, and other web content are accessible to all, including people with disabilities. Responsibilities include partnering with website owners and editors to review and test web content to ensure that it meets accessibility standards and guidelines, such as the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG); working with content developers to ensure accessibility guidelines are properly implemented; evaluating and establishing processes for properly vetting third party web service providers; and serving as a primary point of contact for responding to and informing how the Institute addresses concerns around web accessibility at Campus.

The Program Manager reports to the Information Management Systems & Services (IMSS) Office and collaborates with Human Resources; Student Affairs; Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Assessment; and Strategic Communications departments to ensure consistent deployment of guidelines and practices across campus.

This is a Campus Criticalposition. An employee designated as campus critical is expected to be aware of the campus emergency management plan and to report to Campus as soon as possiblein the event of an emergencyto assist in campus wide response and recovery efforts.

Essential Job Duties

Oversight and Review



  • Perform regular accessibility reviews of Caltech websites, web applications, and other web content, using both automated tools and manual testing methods.
  • Work with designers, developers, and other stakeholders to ensure that accessibility is integrated into the design and development process.
  • Perform accessibility evaluations for websites and applications under consideration for purchase and deployment.


Outreach and Training



  • Develop and implement outreach and training for web designers, developers, and content creators/editors.
  • Provide training to web designers, developers, and content providers on accessibility monitoring software.


Design and Production



  • Work with colleagues to develop accessible templates and tools for web production.
  • Oversee close captioning and video captioning resources for providing information published on institutional websites.
  • Identify, implement, and oversee tools for monitoring website accessibility.


Collaboration and Communication



  • Maintain the Institution's Web accessibility website and materials.
  • Maintain accessibility guidelines that align with Caltech's Web Accessibility Policy.
  • Create accessibility reports and presentations as needed.


Skills & Knowledge



  • Stay up-to-date with the latest developments in accessibility standards, guidelines, and technologies, including but not limited to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act (Section 504).
  • Maintain extensive knowledge with accessibility audit and quality assurance tools and processes.
  • Familiar with web technologies (HTML/CSS, JavaScript, Xml, and Web content management systems).
  • Maintain extensive knowledge with assistive technologies (JAWS, VoiceOver, Dragon, NaturallySpeaking).


Basic Qualifications and Experience



  • Bachelor's degree.
  • 5 years of relevant experience in establishing enterprise-wide web accessibility programs.
  • Strong understanding of accessibility standards and guidelines, such as Web Content Accessibility Guidelines and ADA.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively and independently lead projects to completion.
  • Strong organizational and program management skills to collaborate with multiple teams at Campus.
  • Experience with accessibility testing tools and methods.
  • Knowledge of web technologies, including HTML, CSS, Wagtail, and JavaScript.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
  • Experience managing and successfully implementing organization-wide accessibility projects.
  • Ability to successfully negotiate complex systems and work in a decentralized environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence and bring resources together to implement solutions and enact change, within the framework of ongoing activities at the Institute.
  • Excellent time and project management skills, the ability to manage multiple projects at once and work in a fast-paced, ever-changing environment.
  • Experience in a higher education environment preferred.

Hiring Range

$114,000 - $150,000 per year

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.
