Infection Prevention Manager

GENERAL SUMMARY:

The Infection Prevention Manager is responsible for developing, managing and coordinating the Medical Center's Infection surveillance, prevention and control programs. This role works collaboratively with the Infection Prevention Team in monitoring compliance with infection control procedures and regulations; communicates with internal and external resources to educate and consult on infection control and diseases. This role manages the cost center's fiscal, material and human resources, and participates in performance improvement activities, division and organizational wide initiatives.

PRINCIPAL JOB FUNCTIONS:



  1. *Commits to the mission, vision, beliefs and consistently demonstrates our core values.
  2. *Recruits and manages staff to demonstrate behaviors consistent with Bryan Beliefs and Bryan Core Values; acts as chief retention officer and oversees staff development for area of responsibility.
  3. *Conducts timely staff performance appraisals assuring staff competence while emphasizing staff retention strategies through coaching and individual development.

  4. *Develops and implements a surveillance system to identify nosocomial infections including:



a. Identifies and describes the event to be monitored.
b. Defines the population at risk.
c. Selects appropriate measurement methods including statistical tools and risk stratification.
d. Identifies and describes the data sources and data collection methods.
e. Defines numerators and denominators.
f. Prepares and distributes reports to appropriate departments, teams, or committees.
g. Analyzes data and uses analysis to monitor and improve infection control and healthcare outcomes.
h. Compares the data with external comparative measurements when appropriate.



  1. *Sets and recommends policies and procedures to prevent adverse events.

  2. *Applies the National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) definitions of infections to actual situations and is familiar with the NHSN system and can utilize the applications within that system.
  3. Monitors policies and procedures to assure they are scientifically valid, practical and cost effective.
  4. *Ensures compliance with Joint Commission, federal, state, and local standards, regulations and laws as they relate to infection control.
  5. *Develops and implements a reporting system for communicable diseases.

  6. Works collaboratively with representatives of the Employee Health program to develop and monitor immunizations, communicable disease screenings, work restrictions for communicable diseases and post-exposure follow-ups.


  7. *Intervenes to prevent the transmission of infectious diseases in patients and healthcare workers including:



a. Assures microbiology records are reviewed to identify any unusual clusters.
b. Assists in the development and implementation of environmental rounds.
c. Provides oversight in the development of a hand hygiene monitoring system.
d. Leads or participates in teams, to systemically reduce the risk of infection.
e. Assists with the development of pre-construction risk assessments and the monitoring in those areas.
f. Advises and consults with physicians, nurses patients, families, medical center personnel and the community concerning any precautions needed to be taken to protect patients or healthcare workers.



  1. Accesses medication rooms/areas to assess for outdated medications, storage requirements and contamination of medications.

  2. *Plans and implements educational programs for Medical Center personnel concerning infection control and prevention.
  3. Advances work knowledge by participating in continuing education in-services, through published literature reviews, professional meetings, peer networking, internet access, and seeking ongoing development opportunities.
  4. Performs other related projects and duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:



  1. Ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance.
  2. Knowledge of Hospital infection control procedures including epidemiological principles and surveillance methods, which leads to the development of interventions based on the data.
  3. Knowledge of communicable and infectious diseases, including methods to prevent transmission.
  4. Knowledge of related clinical applications such as sterilization, sanitation, disinfection, asepsis and immunization.
  5. Knowledge of local, State, Federal and Joint Commission regulations as they relate to infection prevention and control.
  6. Knowledge of computer hardware equipment and software applications relevant to work functions.
  7. Knowledge of quality improvement principles and practices.
  8. Ability to plan and design methods and interpret data.
  9. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing including preparation of written reports and oral presentations.
  10. Ability to develop and conduct instructional programs.
  11. Ability to develop written policies and procedures, memoranda and performance evaluations with measurable behaviors.
  12. Ability to schedule, direct, counsel and evaluate employee work and performance.
  13. Ability to act in a proactive manner while also providing crisis/situational management in an erratic and potentially unpredictable work environment.
  14. Ability to balance and prioritize diverse management and clinical responsibilities.



EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Bachelors of Science degree in Nursing, Allied Health or related discipline required. Master's degree preferred.

Certification by the Certification Board of Infection Control and Epidemiology (CBIC) required.

Minimum of three (3) years epidemiology experience in a hospital environment required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

(Physical Requirements are based on federal criteria and assigned by Human Resources upon review of the Principal Job Functions.)
