Position Summary

The Anderson School of Management at the University of New Mexico is looking for an outstanding communicator with strong organizational and interpersonal skills to join our growing team as a Senior Academic Advisor for Undergraduate Programs. Anderson is a world-class business school with award winning faculty and programs, offering a wide array of degree programs for a diverse student population.

The position of Senior Academic Advisor is essential to support the advisement needs of Anderson's undergraduate students that further promote goals of Anderson and UNM to provide high quality services that positively impact the retention, graduation, and overall success of our student population. The Senior Academic Advisor should have a holistic and student-centered approach to advisement and provide guidance to prospective and current students from pre-orientation through graduation. The Senior Academic Advisor would be expected to recommend appropriate courses based on a student's academic level as they progress through the curriculum to degree completion, while maintaining accurate academic records in LoboAchieve and related degree tracking/audit systems (LoboTrax). This position will connect students to campus resources and services that support the student's successful journey through their degree program.

This position:



  • Works with undergraduate students from pre-orientation to graduation, ensuring students are optimizing their academic success and continuing their professional growth and development;
  • Applies a comprehensive approach to student advisement with practices and policies designed to best meet the needs of students;
  • Provides necessary support to students, faculty and staff through individual appointments, Teams and email communications;
  • Critically evaluates and implements improvements in programming, policies, and procedures that positively impact the experiences and outcomes for students;
  • Provides academic advisement, guidance, and progress tracking for meeting program milestones for incoming and continuing students;
  • Assists in recruiting activities to attract new students and coordinate outreach and orientation;
  • Provides support in the development, implementation and marketing of programs;
  • Ability to attend UNM professional workshops and NACADA regional and annual conferences.


The successful candidate will have a proven track record of producing high-quality results, successfully maintaining progress across multiple projects and deadlines, working efficiently with minimal supervision, and adapting to changing priorities. Additionally, they need to be able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing, and be comfortable making public presentations, as evidenced by their cover letter and resume. We seek to hire dynamic individuals who will demonstrate excellence in customer service and the ability to work with teams as well as a variety of students, faculty, staff and members of the business community in order to promote student success and align with the vision and mission of Anderson and UNM. Because of Anderson's unique student populations, our Senior Academic Advisors must be able to work occasional evenings and weekends and must be able to attend recruitment and other student-oriented events on and off campus.

  • All regular, non-temporary positions assigned to this classification are represented by a labor union and subject to the terms and conditions of the US-UNM Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree; at least 2 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.



Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of UNM General Education Curriculum
  • Understanding of degree audit system and academic advisement record keeping
  • Demonstrated working experience evaluating and reviewing transcripts from a variety of institutions from within and outside the US.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills, including strong presentation skills.
  • Demonstrated experience with student outreach, recruitment, orientation, and retention program implementation.
  • Skill in organizing and coordinating student and/or special events.
  • Excellent customer service and team-based skills and ability to work with a varied student population as well as a variety of Anderson stakeholders, which includes faculty, staff, and the business community.
  • Demonstrated skills in multitasking, preparing reports, problem solving, and analyzing program, university, and/or curriculum/graduation requirements.
  • Extensive demonstrated database skills and experience in data analytics as a tool for synchronized communication, degree planning and student intervention.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and work with students remotely.
  • A demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion, as well as working with broadly diverse communities.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the use of Microsoft office products
