The Comparative Pathology amp; Digital Imaging Shared Resource of the Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center is seeking a scientific-minded individual with a preference for applicants with histology experience. The Clinical Lab Services Tech will be an essential member of a customer service-oriented team, executing activities in the histology section of the CPDISR with specific emphasis on immunostaining for clinical diagnoses of veterinary patients and research incorporating animal models and human research samples.

This position will lead the development of new immunohistochemical/-fluorescent protocols utilizing antibodies to detect proteins (antigens) in cells within a tissue section to visualize specific cellular components within their proper histological context. The candidate will also perform immunohistochemical/-fluorescence staining according to optimized protocols.

The position requires sharp focus vision, color vision, attention to detail, and finger dexterity. The day-to-day tasks may involve repetitive movements and risks or discomforts that require specific safety precautions, such as exposure to shared instruments and irritant chemicals. Personal Protective Equipment is provided by CPDISR and its appropriate use is required in the histology laboratory. This position may include lifting/pushing/pulling over 50 lbs, bending and/or reaching for long periods of time, and potential exposure to zoonotic illness. The successful completion of a background check is required.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Prepare wax-embedded and frozen sections for specialized techniques, including laser capture microdissection and in situ hybridization

  • Complete all steps of histochemistry processes including processing, paraffin embedding, microtomy as well as occasional routine and special histochemical staining for animal tissues to be evaluated by light and/or fluorescence microscopy.

  • Responsible for day-to-day quality control on all analyses performed in cooperation with the Director of CPDISR

  • Assumes responsibility for inventory and ordering supplies

  • Assists customers with online submission through OSUCCC eRAMP which manages work flow through the lab and billing

  • Assists the CPDISR Director and clients with project planning and instructions prior to submission

  • Maintaining thorough and accurate records and protocols

  • Production of written and photographic reports and records of projects

  • Maintains laboratory equipment

  • Assists with evaluation and identification of laboratory process improvement

  • Assists with implementation of quality monitors for quality improvement purposes

  • Assists with writing of Standard Operating Policies and Procedures for the lab

  • Completes other duties as assigned.

  • This position has the potential to expose the Histology Technologists to animal tissues/dander.

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Medical Laboratory Technology, Biological Sciences or related field required.
    ASCP certification (HT, HTL) or qualification in immunohistochemistry (QIHC) upon hire or ability to obtain certification within 2 years of appointment required.

  • 2 years relevant experience required, 4-6 preferred.

  • Energetic, customer service-oriented, self-directed and self-motivated individual with effective written and verbal communication skills who is able to work in a high volume, fast-paced environment
