Position Summary

Under the leadership of the Executive Director, the Associate Director for Residential Experience, the Residence Life manager, and the supervision of the Residence Education senior staff, the Resident Advisor (RA) is a live-in student staff position that plays an integral role in the function of the department of Residence Life and Student Housing (RLSH).

RLSH aims to enhance educational, social, and personal growth for residents. The Resident Advisor helps to create conditions within the residence halls that allow a diverse student population to live and learn in a comfortable, inclusive environment.

To aid the department in achieving these goals, theResident Advisor must employ a student-centered approach, the ability to identify and address student needs, a desire to collaborate, strategic problem-solving ability, sound judgment, administrative management skills, and a timely response to problems that arise.

RAs work approximately 20 hours per week throughout the academic year. Position responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

Administration

  • Attend all staff meetings and seminars beginning at 7:00PM every Tuesday
  • Attend and actively participate in Community Association on Tuesday evenings after staff meetings end
  • Attend and participate in training sessions and workshops prior to each semester
  • Facilitate floor wide meetings as needed to relay pertinent information
  • Complete all paperwork and other administrative tasks for job components in accordance with corresponding deadlines and procedures
  • Assist and be present throughout the entirety of departmental functions (check ins, check outs, residence hall tours, operation registration, etc.
  • Communicate consistently as well as meet weekly or bi-weekly with their supervisor
  • Participate in selected committee or additional assignments as assigned
  • Communicate housekeeping and maintenance service requirements through appropriate channels
  • Work overnight on call duty shift that may include weekends and breaks
  • Work at least three but no more than five hours at the SRC, Rainforest, East, and/or West desk depending on assignment. Desk tasks include handling check ins/outs, equipment, and other administrative tasks.

Community Development & Programming

  • Be an active and integral member of the residence hall community, and work to develop and foster a positive healthy community in their assigned area
  • Establish rapport with residents through regular interactions with residents and maintaining a sufficient hall presence and availability to assigned community
  • Plan and participate in residence hall programming to meet the needs of the residents based on the department's programming model
  • Evaluate program execution to ensure continual improvement in programming throughout the year
  • Serve as a resource person in assisting resident generated programs
  • Support and participate in the building and success of Community Association through regular meeting attendance, helping with CA Programs as directed, and encouraging residents to get involved
  • Supervise, implement, and participate in department and university events as directed including but not limited to:
  • Preview Days, Res-Hall-A-Daze, Class Crawl, Olympiad, Preview Days, Lobo Reclaim, Hanging of Greens, Student Staff Selection

Student Conduct, Intervention, & Support

  • Respond to, mediate, and refer living unit conflicts to professional staff or appropriate campus resources
  • Serve as a peer support person for residents
  • Identify, respond to, and confront disciplinary situations in the halls in a fair and consistent manner
  • Document all policy infractions and any unusual or inappropriate behavior via the incident report database
  • Inform supervisor of inappropriate resident behavior and concerns within the community, and consult with supervisory staff as required
  • Perform overnight on call duty responsibilities during specific times and respond to emergency situations
  • Complete all trainings required of Campus Security Authorities
  • All Resident Advisors who are employed in the apartment locations (Rainforest, Student Resident Center, & Redondo Village Apartments) will be required to work a portion of the winter break
  • Other general job-related duties, as assigned.

Term and Conditions of this appointment include:

  • The period of employment is for the entire academic year, including additional time at the beginning and end of each semester to support move in, move out, and programming
  • RAs may return to their position for additional academic year appointments reappointments are not automatic and are based on job performance and the outlined application process
  • Have no outside employment during the first semester, and have no more than 10 hours of outside employment, paid internships or student teaching after the first semester in the job
  • Discuss and receive approval for all external commitments (student organizations, Fraternity/Sorority involvement, volunteer positions, etc.) with supervisor prior to the start of the semester
  • Limit course load to 16 undergraduate/9 graduate credit hours during the first semester of employment

Minimum Qualifications

Enrolled in a degree seeking program at UNM, Enrolled at least half-time (6 hours) at UNM for fall and spring semesters (Audit hours do not count), and if Work Study, you must meet Satisfactory Academic Progress.

To be eligible for this position, candidates must:

  • Maintain enrollment as a full-time student in a degree granting program at the University of New Mexico
  • Earn and maintain at least a 2.5 semester and cumulative GPA
  • Have completed two semesters of college or university experience by the start of employment
  • Be available to fill the position for the full academic year
  • Ability to live on campus in a provided single room
  • Successfully pass a pre-employment background check
