*This is a hybrid role based out of our HQ office near Portland, OR. In-office expectation is 3 days or more per week at manager discretion.

SUMMER INTERN PROGRAM SUMMARY

Interns can expect to gain valuable hands-on experience within their department while building partnerships with teams and fellow interns along the way!

  • Location: Portland, OR

  • Duration: ~10 weeks

  • Start Date Options: May 19th- July 25th or June 23rd - August 29th

  • Application Deadline: January 26th, 2025

  • Pay: $22.50/hr

ABOUT THE POSITION

In this role, you will develop dashboards that provide critical insights into data permissions, costs, and usage, using Unity Catalog system tables. Your work will help streamline data governance, optimize storage and compute costs, and improve resource utilization. You'll analyze access patterns, identify inefficiencies, and deliver actionable insights through advanced analytics and data visualization tools like Power BI or Tableau. This is a hands-on opportunity to make a tangible impact on how the organization manages its data ecosystem, ensuring it's secure, cost-efficient, and primed for growth.

You will work on an agile team and collaborate with Product Owners, Business Systems Analysts, Data Governance Analysts, DevOps Engineers, and fellow Data Engineers.

HOW YOU'LL MAKE A DIFFERENCE

  • Enhancing Data Governance: You will design and deliver a comprehensive dashboard that visualizes user and group-level access permissions, highlights over-permissioned users, unused roles, and datasets without ownership, and tracks permission trends over time, ensuring better oversight and control.

  • Driving Cost Efficiency: By analyzing data usage, storage, and compute costs, you will identify optimization opportunities, such as unused or underutilized tables, inefficient queries, and unnecessary expenses. Your work will help teams make informed decisions to reduce costs and improve resource utilization.

  • Optimizing Data Access: You will create dashboards that track last access times, identify frequently accessed datasets, and detect anomalies such as large or inefficient queries, enabling more efficient use of data resources and informed governance decisions.

  • Uncovering Actionable Insights: Through advanced analytics and visualization, you will reveal trends in storage growth, compute costs, and data access patterns, empowering leadership with the insights needed to proactively address inefficiencies and improve performance.

  • Delivering Scalable Solutions: By leveraging Unity Catalog system tables, SQL, and data visualization tools like Power BI or Tableau, you will implement robust and scalable solutions that enhance operational efficiency and support long-term data strategy goals.

YOU ARE

  • Eager to design and deliver data models on the Azure cloud technology platform in support of Data & Analytics initiatives.

  • Excited to shape new capability and collaborate with other engineers.

  • Able to quickly grasp technical concepts and solve problems.

YOU HAVE

  • Majoring in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field or a combination of education and experience.

  • A minimum cumulative GPA of a 2.7 from an accredited college or university.

  • Prior exposure to relational database or data lake concepts and platforms in either an academic or professional setting.

  • Exposure to or interest in Data & Analytics activities such as developing data models, implementing data transformation, and managing the production implementation as part of an engineering team in support of Reporting & Business Intelligence scenarios.

  • Solid technical, communication and interpersonal skills. Sound judgment and decision-making, and the appropriate sense of urgency.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

  • Current student with one of the following academic standings: Rising Senior, Senior, Graduate/ MBA student

  • Degree relevant to the internship you are applying for

  • Must be able to participate in 10-week program for either date option provided above

  • Must be able to work onsite at our headquarter location for the duration of the internship- interns will partner directly with their managers regarding expectations to work collaboratively in office specified days of the week
