Advanced Practice Provider, Critical Care Fellowship

The Critical Care Advanced Practice Provider (APP) Fellowship is a one-year postgraduate clinical training program for physician assistants and advanced practice registered nurses who wish to specialize in adult critical care. This comprehensive program includes a mix of didactic and hands-on learning experiences in various intensive care units, such as the Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU), Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU), Neurosurgical Intensive Care Unit (NSICU), and Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU). In addition to these rotations, APP Fellows may also have the chance to participate in specialty rotations such as transplant, infectious disease, palliative care, interventional radiology, and nephrology. The program is held at the William P. Clements Jr. University Hospital, a nationally ranked academic medical center.

During the course of the fellowship, the Critical Care Fellows are full time employees of UT Southwestern Medical Center that receive benefits, including paid time off, continuing education funds, and low cost comprehensive medical, dental, vision, and life insurance. Fellows receive a competitive annual salary of $95,000. The Adult Critical Care Fellowship program is scheduled to commence on Monday, October 6, 2025.

* Purpose Statement: Describing your interest in the Critical Care APP Fellowship Program and how it aligns with future career goals (500-word limit)

* Two letters of recommendation: Preferably one academic letter and one clinical letter of recommendation.

EDUCATION

* A Master's degree or higher from an accredited Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant program is a prerequisite, and candidates are expected to complete their program by May 30, 2025.

* Nurse Practitioners must ensure that their graduate education aligns with the patient population they will be managing during the fellowship program.

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION



  • Current Texas Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (AGACNP-BC or ACNPC-AG) or Physician Assistant license and appropriate NP/PA board certification (TX license must be obtained by August 1, 2025)
  • Graduate of an Accredited Nursing, Nurse Practitioner, and/or Physician Assistant program.
  • Authorization for prescriptive authority by the Texas Board of Nursing.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certified by the American Heart Association or Red Cross based on UT Southwestern policy for Advanced Practice Providers.


EXPERIENCE

Program admission is open to new graduates or experienced Acute Care Nurse Practitioners or Physician Assistants that meet the program eligibility requirements.

JOB DUTIES



  1. Conducts and documents comprehensive initial and ongoing physical examinations based on age and diagnosis, including psychological status.
  2. Synthesizes data and utilizes evidence to develop, implement, and evaluate the patient plan of care, including ordering and interpreting laboratory, radiology, and other diagnostic studies/results.
  3. Demonstrates proficiency in technical/procedural skills, as appropriate based on specialty and training.
  4. Provides relevant management, referrals, counseling, and education to patients, families and caregivers related to current care and preventive health measures.
  5. Facilitates/participates in quality related initiatives through planned group processes, workshops, seminars, and staff meetings, to improve clinical and system practice performance.
  6. Collaborates in research projects and protocols; and routinely applies evidence based best practices to patient care.
  7. Attend and participate in all fellowship didactic and educational activities
  8. Performs other duties as assigned

  • Accuracy and ability to exercise considerable judgment.


  • Ability to maintain current customer service, clinical, and technical skills.
  • Ability to identify opportunities and provide suggestions for improvements in departmental policy, procedures, and protocols.
  • Proficient use of EMR in the delivery of care
