Job Summary

The position functions as a statistical analyst for the UCSF Department of Emergency Medicine supporting departmental principal investigators. The research data analyst will primarily be responsible for developing and conducting complex statistical analyses and providing datatbase development and management.

The analyst will use skills as an experienced research professional with an in-depth understanding of biostatistics and research software programming techniques to oversee and conduct the statistical component of new and ongoing protocols. The analyst will work closely with research team members (e.g. principal investigators, research managers, trainees, CRCs, etc.) to support the conduct of the research. The individual will help manage, analyze, interpret, and report on statistical findings. Specifically, the individual will conduct complex statistical analyses and prepare findings for presentation at professional meeting and publication in medical journals.

The individual must be detail-oriented and thorough, have excellent verbal and written communication skills, and proactively communicate with research team members. The individual must demonstrate good judegement in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions and manage multiple projects simultaneously with competing priorities.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $84,400 - $120,100 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

The Department of Emergency Medicine (DEM) provides emergency medical care to approximately 175,000 patients annually at the UCSF Medical Center at Parnassus, UCSF Benioff Children's Hospitals at Mission Bay and Oakland and Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center. The administrative staff supports the work of 90 full-time and 50+ part-time attending physicians, a residency program, fellowship programs and over 300 house staff and students each year. Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree with a major in public health, public policy and / or equivalent combination of education and experience/training
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in program evaluation or operations research or related experience
  • Thorough knowledge of research function
  • Knowledge and skills in advanced epidemiologic and statistical analysis and proficiency in at least one statistical program (e.g., STATA, R, SAS, etc.)
  • Thorough skills in analysis and consultation.
  • Skills to communicate complex information in a clear and concise manner both verbally and in writing.
  • Skills in project management.
  • Research skills at a level to evaluate alternate solutions and develop recommendations.
  • Experience with graphs and spreadsheets, including Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Must possess extensive knowledge of large, complex databases (e.g., California Healthcare Access and Information Patient Discharge Data; Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project [HCUP] databases, Medicare) along with merging of other commonly used healthcare datasets, such as the American Hospital Association Annual Survey, Census data, and the Area Resource Files

Preferred Qualifications


  • Master's or PhD degree in public health, health services research, health policy, economics, statistics, public policy or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Four to Five years of experience performing complex statistical analysis
  • Graphic design experience - ability to create presentations and publications (briefs, dashboards) using software such as Publisher
  • Ability to use geographical mapping software (e.g., ArcGIS)
