Job Title: Fatigue Engineer I

Location(s): Philadelphia, PA, USA

1. Summary of Position:

Responsibility for monitoring fatigue load telemetry during AW609 tilt-rotor experimental flight test. Responsibility for performing damage calculations for prototype aircraft life management. Responsibility for performing safe life calculations for aircraft certification. Responsibility for validating full-scale component and coupon fatigue test execution and performing test data analysis while demonstrating compliance with damage tolerance requirements.

1.

Provide flight test support as the Fatigue Subject Matter Expert through monitoring real-time telemetry for load exceedances and develop solutions to any fatigue-related aircraft issues to ensure safety is assured while maintaining flight test efficiency.

Manage prototype aircraft safe life during flight test using sound judgment and reason based on the preliminary results of structural tests and analysis. Includes calculation of fatigue life limitations for primary structural elements based on flight test loads.

3.

Manage aircraft fatigue substantiation criteria for certification through calculation of retirement lives and inspection intervals. Includes management of expected aircraft usage and loading conditions recorded in flight, as well properly validating all calculations on a case-by-case basis.

Support AW609 full-scale component fatigue testing to show compliance with certification rules by validating test plans provided by the supplier/design team. Includes demonstration of compliance with damage tolerance requirements and validation of threat assessments.

5.

Support fatigue coupon testing on AW609 specific materials, process the results according to the company standard practice for inclusion into the fatigue database, and author test reports documenting the material characterization results.

Produce high-quality deliverables including test plans, test reports, instrumentation requirements, material data, fatigue analysis report.

  1. Qualifications for Position:

A. Education

BS degree in Engineering; MS degree in Engineering preferred.

B. Experience

  1. Combination of education and/or experience:
  • with fatigue (on both metal and composite components) and damage tolerance analysis.
  • developing structural tests on components or coupons preferred.
  • working with large data sets, developing efficient methods to process large quantities of data, with an emphasis on the ability to verify and validate own work.
  1. MS Office experience required with an emphasis on Excel capability. Visual Basic or other programming / scripting experience preferred.
  2. Work experience in a technical organization for developmental aircraft and participating in transport-category certification programs preferred.

C. Competencies & Attributes

Good understanding of fatigue methodology for metal and/or composite materials, fatigue and damage tolerance analysis, structural components design and data analysis.

2.

Good analytical skills: Ability to understand and apply the appropriate engineering analysis required to meet complex certification requirements.

3.

Good understanding of requirements and standards utilized for fatigue component and material coupon testing.

4.

Good communication and presentation skills: ability to effectively communicate to all levels of the organization, the ability to negotiate win-win solutions in the presence of conflict and ambiguity, and an ability to be a persuasive advocate to internal and external customers.

5.

Ability to independently work in parallel on multiple tasks.

6.

Ability to work in team and across geographies.
