Lumos is looking for a full-time Project Engineer! If you have experience as a Project Engineer - who's excited for a fast-paced experience, ready to help us grow, and ready to recommend process changes that ensure we're harnessing our technology to the best of our ability while broadening our ability to set up and maintain our service, we want to hear from you!

Under the supervision and direction of the Project Engineer Manager, this position is responsible for performing complex engineering tasks, including analyzing, evaluating, designing, planning, and modifying various aspects of telephone and telecommunication facilities and equipment.

The Engineer will be tasked with designing GPON/XGS-PON, TDM, and Ethernet circuits across the Lumos network for data and voice services, including Internet, Ethernet, Network, VITAL/Illuminet, ILEC exchange territories, and Carrier End User. Additionally, they will assist with research and data cleanup as assigned by the Manager. This work will be conducted across multiple Resource Inventory Systems maintained by Lumos, including Granite, CHR, and VC4.

*** This is a fully remote opportunity, preferably available to professionals who work from home in Lumos's current footprint. Primarily in the Kentucky or Ohio area.***

Essential Functions




  • Coordinate, schedule, and execute intra-departmental Operations engineering tasks, ensuring seamless workflow and project completion.
  • Analyze complex engineering challenges while supervising company and contract engineers to drive efficiency and quality.
  • Lead and facilitate design reviews, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and compliance in engineering records, reports, drawings, and technical documents.
  • Stay ahead of industry advancements by continuously expanding knowledge of cutting-edge network and data system technologies, architectures, and products, while developing strategic network architecture plans and policies to align with corporate initiatives, customer demands, and evolving technology trends.
  • Deliver clear and concise written and verbal feedback on processes, methodologies, configurations, and technical solutions to optimize network performance and reliability.
  • Ensure new project deployments adhere to established standards while maintaining security, cost-effectiveness, and alignment with product and operational requirements.
  • Collaborate with Product, Engineering, and Operations teams to align network technologies with product requirements, performance standards, and long-term strategic goals.
  • Develop and maintain strong professional relationships with internal and external agencies to support operational success and seamless project execution.
  • Design and provision customer and network services using Site Tracker or other task management systems, leveraging VC4, Granite, or CHR inventory systems for record creation, facility assignments, and circuit design.
  • Investigate and analyze existing circuit designs and order histories, ensuring data integrity through accurate record maintenance and cleanup in Inventory Management Systems.
  • Process disconnects orders by efficiently clearing circuits from VC4, Granite, or CHR via task management systems.
  • Design and implement less complex circuit types, including DS1s, DIA, MPLS, and splitters, by generating DLRs in IMS systems.
  • Manage and distribute incoming ASR orders via email, ensuring accurate and timely execution across internal teams.
  • Performs on-call duties when necessary, and other duties as assigned include departmental and cross-functional projects.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required




  • Plan, develop, and coordinate multiple projects while effectively managing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrate a strong work ethic by proactively supporting customer needs, responding promptly, and maintaining consistency in service.
  • Leverage in-depth knowledge of the telecommunications industry, including Operations engineering design, electronic communications, and related engineering principles.
  • Analyze complex technical systems and designs, breaking them into components to evaluate, define, and solve engineering challenges.
  • Communicate technical issues effectively to both technical and non-technical stakeholders, providing clear, informative, and persuasive insights through verbal and written communication.
  • Conduct engineering studies and surveys while organizing and maintaining accurate engineering files and documentation.
  • Exhibit excellent interpersonal, problem-solving, and project management skills, fostering collaboration across diverse teams.
  • Maintain a high level of professionalism, attention to detail, and the ability to represent Lumos effectively among individuals with varying backgrounds



Other Experience & Requirements




  • Bachelor's degree in a technical field or equivalent work experience.
  • 3-5 years of experience in the telecommunications industry, with a proven track record in system design and deployment.
  • Experience in the fiber or telecom industry is preferred.
