DESCRIPTION

The City of Corona has an exciting opportunity to join our Police Department as a Police Records Technician I/II Flex. The Police Records Technician I/II performs a variety of specialized clerical and technical duties involved in processing various police records and reports. The Police Records Technician II is distinguished from the Police Records Technician I by the performance of the full range of duties as assigned, working independently, and exercising judgment and initiative. Positions in the Police Records Technician class series are flexibly staffed; positions at the Police Records Technician II level are normally filled by advancement from the Police Records Technician I level; progression to the Police Records Technician II level is dependent on (i) management affirmation that the position is performing the full range of duties assigned to the classification; (ii) satisfactory work performance; (iii) the incumbent meeting the minimum qualifications for the classification including any licenses and certifications; and (iv) management approval for progression to the Police Records Technician II level.


The Corona Police Department is made up of over 250 employees including officers and professional staff which is comprised of three divisions: Field Services, Investigative Services, and Support Services. The successful candidate will possess the following knowledge, skills/abilities, experience, and characteristics:

Knowledge
  • Knowledge of principles, practices, methods, and techniques of records management, including records disbursement procedures.
  • Familiarity with police terminology and law enforcement codes.
Skills/Abilities
  • Interpret, apply, and explain applicable federal, state, and local codes, regulations, policies, technical processes, and procedures.
  • Enter data into a computer system and prepare written materials with sufficient speed and accuracy to perform the work.
  • File and maintain automated and hardcopy records with accuracy.
  • Maintain confidentiality of data encountered in the source of work.
  • Compile and summarize information.
  • Research a variety of topics in assigned areas of responsibility.
  • Establish and maintain a variety of filing, recordkeeping, and tracking systems.
  • Independently organize work, set priorities, meet critical deadlines, and follow-up on assignments.
Education & Experience
  • Completion of the twelfth (12th) grade or equivalent.
  • Police Record Technician I: One (1) year of responsible experience performing clerical support work which includes considerable public contact. Successful completion within 12 months of employment the California State Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) Basic Records Clerk course.
  • Police Record Technician II: Two (2) years of increasingly responsible records management experience in a capacity comparable to a Police Records Technician I with the City of Corona. Successful completion of the California State Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) Basic Records Clerk course.
  • Candidates with prior public safety experience are highly desirable.

This position is FLSA Non-Exempt eligible for overtime compensation.

Application Process

Applications will be accepted until Tuesday, February 6, 2025, at 10:00AM. Applicants are encouraged to apply early. Applications will not be accepted after this deadline.

Candidates that successfully pass the screening process will be invited to a tentative virtual oral interview. Successful candidates will be invited for an in person oral interview. Interviews are scheduled based on the department's need. The top scoring candidates from the oral interview will be placed on an eligibility list and will be contacted in ranked order by the department to start the background process as vacancies arise. Notifications for candidates will always be sent via email.
Successful candidates will undergo a thorough background investigation and medical exam with the Corona Police Department. Background investigation will include but is not limited to the following:
  • No felony conviction(s).
  • Submit to a fingerprint and criminal history check - State and Federal Bureaus.
  • Good moral character as determined by a thorough background investigation.
  • United States high school graduate, GED, or equivalent.
  • No conviction(s) of a serious offense, or numerous convictions of minor offenses.
  • Submit to a polygraph examination.
  • Successfully pass a medical and psychological examination.
  • Credit history check, if established, must be satisfactory.

THE ORGANIZATION
The City of Corona is a General Law city operating under a Council-Manager form of government. Policymaking and legislative authority is vested in the City Council, consisting of a Mayor and four Council Members. Members of the City Council are elected by District to a four-year term. The Mayor is selected by the Council and serves as the presiding officer for one year.

The City is organized into the following departments/organizational units: Community Services, City Manager's Office, Economic Development, Finance, Fire, Human Resources, Information Technology, Legal and Risk Management, Police, Planning & Development, Public Works and Utilities. Oversight of these departments is divided between the City Manager and two Assistant City Managers.

The City's total operating budget for Fiscal Year 2025 is $ 399.1 million with a General Fund operating budget of $ 209.6 million. Corona enjoys a workforce of 922 dedicated employees who provide high quality services to its residents and visitors each day.
