The Metro Transit Police Department is one of the fastest growing agencies in the state due the expansion of light rail and Rapid Transit Bus systems. We are a licensed police force committed to the safety of our customers and employees, serving eight counties and approximately 85 cities in the region. We currently have 109 full-time officers, 26 part-time officers, 16 community service officers and 32 administrative staff dedicated to one thing; public safety on and near our transit system.

How your work would contribute to our organization and the Twin Cities region:

As a Principal Administrative Specialist for the Metro Transit Police Department, you will provide administrative support with limited supervision to ensure the efficient flow of information and communication within the division and throughout the agency. This position is based within the training unit at our East Command. This position is responsible for assisting the training unit and their needs for training, scheduling, purchasing and data tracking and entry as well as assisting with academy classes, in-service and other duties as assigned.

This position works onsite, Monday - Friday, day hours, and has access to free parking and/or access to free bus/rail transportation.

This posting will establish a six (6) months eligibility list for current and future positions.

What you would do in this job

  • Maintain peace officer training records and enter training data.
  • Work with the MN POST Board for licensure credits, training, and training tracking
  • Assist with creating curriculum for the MN POST Board Training and approval process
  • Assist with purchase requests and obtaining items needed for the training unit
  • Help document and track purchases for the unit year-end report
  • Create paperwork needed for training registration
  • Coordinate with vendors and venues for training, events and in-services
  • There may be additional duties assigned by the training unit

What education and experience are required for this job (minimum qualifications)

Any of the following combinations of completed education (in Business Administration, Office Administration, or similar) and administrative work experience.

  • High school diploma or equivalent AND at least four (4) years of administrative work experience.
  • Associate's degree or higher and at least two (2) years of administrative work experience.

What additional skills and experience would be helpful in this job (desired qualifications):
  • Degree in law enforcement, corrections, business, or closely related field.
  • Administrative experience in a police/law enforcement agency.
  • Understanding of scheduling, contracts and payroll for training and reimbursement codes
  • Experience with project management or finance support.
  • Experience maintaining confidential information.
  • Detail-oriented, multi-tasking, and organizational skills.
  • Experience working with diverse populations.

What knowledge, skills and abilities you should have within the first six months on the job:
  • Knowledge of a body of standardized regulations, requirements, procedures, and operations associated with clerical and administrative duties related to the assigned support function.
  • Knowledge of police terminology.
  • Skills in Microsoft Office Suite of products.
  • Skilled in typing and transcribing from recordings and in-person.
  • Ability to perform data entry with efficiency and accuracy.
  • Ability to perform basic math calculations accurately.
  • Ability to verbally communicate information clearly and concisely.
  • Ability to effectively organize tasks and establish work priorities.
  • Under limited supervision, recognize when assistance or guidance is required to set priorities or redirect workload.
  • Ability to display independent judgement, initiative, and organization in solving a variety of problems.
  • Ability to work independently with sensitive and confidential matters.
  • Ability to review data for details and accuracy.

You would perform your work in a standard office setting. Work may sometimes require travel between your primary work site and other sites.

If you are new to the Metropolitan Council, you must pass a drug test (safety sensitive positions only), and a background check which verifies education, employment, and criminal history. All applicants' background checks and fingerprints must be cleared by the Criminal Bureau of Apprehension in order to be a user of their CJIS system. Failure to be cleared by BCA will automatically nullify any job offer extended. A driving record check and/or physical may be conducted if applicable to the job. If you have a criminal conviction, you do not automatically fail. The Metropolitan Council considers felony, gross misdemeanor and misdemeanor convictions on a case-by-case basis, based on whether they are related to the job and whether the candidate has demonstrated adequate rehabilitation.
