New Haven is offering exciting programs for all children, in age groups from birth-19, including young adults from 20-24 for the Summer of 2025. Come be a part of it!


Hires for Summer may include specific City Summer Camp assignments and programs; there are other Youth & Recreation programs that are provided year-round.
Hours of work will vary with assignment.


PRIMARY FUNCTIONS
The Program Aide is tasked with actively supporting, coordinating, and enhancing all aspects of recreation-related indoor and outdoor seasonal activities. As a pivotal member of the team, the Program Aide works in tandem with instructors, coaches, and officials to ensure the seamless execution of diverse programs, fostering a safe, engaging, and inclusive environment for participants of all age groups.

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assists instructors, coaches, and officials in organizing various programs and activities for participants, including sports, camp, and recreational events.

  • Helps set up equipment and materials needed for each activity or program.

  • Supervises children during activities to ensure their safety and enjoyment.

  • Provides assistance and support to participants who may need extra help or guidance.

  • Encourages positive behavior and sense of fair play among participants.

  • Assists with administrative tasks such as registration, attendance tracking, and record-keeping.

  • Communicates effectively with program staff, parents, and participants.

  • Maintains cleanliness and orderliness of program areas and equipment.

  • Follows all safety guidelines and protocols established by the Department.

  • Performs related work as required.

EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

Recent high school graduate or a currently enrolled high school student at least 16 years of age with the ability and interest to assist instructors, coaches, and officials in a wide variety of supervised activities organized typically for children in grades K-12. Whether assisting in a camp setting, arts and crafts, or other program, the ideal candidate for Program Aide should have some relatable experience in their designated area. Basic First Aid skills, including CPR, Heimlich Maneuver, treatment of allergic reactions, and concussion protocol is highly desirable.


KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Previous experience working with children preferred but not required.
  • Strong communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills to work with groups of all ages.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Ability to work independently according to general or specific instructions.
  • Ability to learn of the diverse cultural backgrounds within the community, recognizing and respecting cultural differences.
  • Some knowledge of basic computer applications for record keeping.
  • Willingness to perform physical tasks outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Effective planning and organizational skills.
  • Ability to learn safety protocols and guidelines relevant to recreational activities, including emergency response protocols.
  • Ability to take direction and initiative.
  • Must be able to work flexible hours, as programming may include evening and weekend schedules.


NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to work in various weather conditions, including rain, snow, or extreme temperatures may be required, depending on programming.
  • Agility and physical fitness to be mobile and stand for extended periods of time.


SALARY, BARGAINING UNIT & TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
This "Non Tested" position may be General or Special Funds.
This part time or seasonal position is not eligible to receive medical benefits, vacation pay, union membership, or union contractual benefits. Any period of part time employment will not be construed in any way to mean probationary employment. Persons may not be employed in two concurrent positions with the City and/or the Board of Education at the same time.
Seasonal employment not to exceed 120 calendar days.
Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of: (1) a pre-employment background check,and (2) if over 18, a pre-employment drug screening in accordance with the City's Drug Free Workplace Policy*.
