The Manager of Board Development & Engagement is responsible for fostering strong relationships between the organization and its Board of Directors. This role supports board development initiatives, collaborates with external consultants, and serves as a key liaison between board members and executive leadership. The position also provides coaching and guidance to senior leaders on board engagement, supports board communications, and ensures the effective use of technology for board operations.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Board Development & Strategy

  • Partner with external consultants to implement board development initiatives, ensuring alignment with the organization's mission, strategic goals, and governance best practices.
  • Develop and execute engagement strategies to enhance board member involvement, education, and overall effectiveness.
  • Implement tailored onboarding programs for new board members to ensure a seamless and informed transition into their roles.
  • Research and advise on best practices for board governance, engagement, and communications.

Board Member Relations & Communication

  • Act as the primary liaison between board members and executive leadership, ensuring clear, effective, and timely communication.
  • Maintain and update board engagement plans, ensuring alignment with organizational objectives.
  • Research and advise on the best use of technology to facilitate board communications and engagement.

Leadership Coaching & Board Presentations

  • Work with leadership staff presenting to the board to help synthesize content and fine-tune messaging for maximum impact.
  • Provide editorial support for pre-reads, presentations, and other written communications to ensure clarity and effectiveness.
  • Coach and prepare senior leaders to deliver impactful board presentations, ensuring clarity, confidence, and alignment with board expectations.
  • Develop resources, templates, and training to enhance executive and leadership team readiness for board interactions.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:

  • Education: Bachelor's degree (B.A.) from four-year college or university required; Master's degree preferred.
  • Experience:
    • At least two (2) years of experience in board relations, nonprofit management, governance, or executive support roles.
    • At least two (2) years of experience in in board development, leadership education, or professional program development, with proficiency in needs assessment, curriculum design, strategic planning, implementation, and outcome evaluation. Experience in virtual training and engagement strategies preferred.
    • An equivalent combination of professional experience and education may be considered as meeting the Education/Professional requirements.
  • Skills & Competencies:
    • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication, with the ability to synthesize complex information into clear and compelling messaging.
    • Ability to navigate complex organizational dynamics and work effectively with senior leaders and board members.
    • Strong organizational and project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
    • Proficiency in board management software (e.g., Board Effect) and communication tools.
    • Ability to work collaboratively across departments and external partners.
  • Preferred:
    • Experience working with board development consultants.
    • Familiarity with nonprofit or healthcare governance structures.
    • Strong facilitation and coaching skills, with an emphasis on leadership presence and executive communication.
    • Knowledge of best practices in digital board communication and technology solutions.
