The Jackson Laboratory (JAX) is seeking an Associate Director, Solution Architecture and Engineering, who will be responsible for the overall JAX Mice, Clinical and Research Services (JMCRS) architectural strategy, best practices and software delivery standards, software engineering, and excellence. This role will ensure architectural integrity and excellence in software engineering, achieving successful project outcomes through collaborative efforts with key team members. In close partnership with JMCRS IT leadership, the Associate Director, Solution Architecture and Engineering is tasked with ensuring that the solution architecture aligns to business needs and technical requirements, driving the architecture through to execution via the software engineering team.

What You Contribute

  • Lead the architectural review for all work within the JMCRS portfolio of software delivery.
  • Establish, define, apply, and foster architectural and software engineering standards, best practices, and ways of working - identifying and executing opportunities to optimize our current process
  • Create an architecture and software engineering community of practice, working with architects outside of JMCRS to share knowledge and set direction.
  • Establish and lead the Technical Architecture Review Board (ARB) process to review and approve work before implementation, ensuring collaboration with other architecture roles at JAX.
  • Evaluate current application implementation and identify ways to rationalize & simplify the application portfolio.
  • Stay abreast of industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices, and apply this knowledge to drive innovation within the organization, orchestrating POVs when applicable.
  • Recommend best-fit technology for given business problems, identifying commodity versus differentiating capabilities and providing direction on the buy vs. build decision.
  • Partner with Networking, Security, Infrastructure, Change Management and other dependent organizations to ensure alignment of architecture and delivery across the organization.
  • Help practice members solve complex technical problems within and outside of the team & Identify opportunities for the practice and roles to evolve for the betterment of the organization.
  • Foster a strong culture of coaching and mentoring direct reports, helping individuals develop their skills and achieve their professional goals and career growth. Educate internal and external IT personnel on the practice's standards, guidelines, best practices, goals, and output.
  • Assess personnel talent in relation to teams, helping agile delivery teams optimize their composition.

What You're Good At

  • Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Business or related field.
  • 5-10 years of software delivery expertise.
  • Extensive experience in technical architecture and strategic delivery, with a proven track record of leading and delivering successful technology projects.
  • Deep understanding of technology solutions, engineering and architectural processes, and best practices.
  • Experience leading small to large projects of varying complexity.
  • Ability to influence and foster buy-in at all levels.
  • Strong communication skills: verbal, written, and listening to various levels across the organization.
  • Ability to gain a broad understanding of overall software delivery roadmaps and related strategies.
  • Knowledge of Agile Frameworks, preferably Scrum and/or SAFe.

The salary range is $113,718 - $190,388. Salary will be determined based on qualifications and relevant years of experience.
