Job Summary

The position will be part of the Company's Litigation Team and will report to the Associate General Counsel overseeing the company's insured docket of claims (mostly general and auto liability). The Paralegal will play a pivotal role in the intake, management, and resolution of litigated and non-litigated matters. The position will involve investigating claims, interviewing witnesses and other key personnel, and identifying and obtaining contracts and other critical documents. The Paralegal will work closely with attorneys, business stakeholders, and external parties to achieve positive outcomes with the least disruption to the business.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Manage the intake of new claims, conduct early investigations, identify key documents, interview witnesses, and work with third-party claims administrators.
  • Assist in litigation discovery, including pulling contracts and other relevant documents.
  • Document Management: Organize and maintain files, correspondence, and related documentation.
  • Manage first-party property damage for units that rent vehicles for work.
  • Assist with internal fraud investigations.
  • Training and Education: Provide guidance and training to internal stakeholders on claim-related processes, best practices, and legal requirements.
  • Review and authorize third-party administrator to pay defense bills.
  • Review client tenders.
  • Some administrative functions.
  • Occasionally attend mediations (almost all are conducted remotely).

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor's degree in paralegal studies, legal studies, business administration, or a related field.
  • Previous experience of at least five years as a paralegal or in a similar role, with knowledge of claims management and litigation.
  • Proficiency in claims management software systems (e.g., LegalTracker), Microsoft Office Suite, and legal research databases (e.g., Westlaw, LexisNexis).

OTHER SKILLS:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate complex legal concepts clearly and effectively to diverse audiences.
  • Attention to Detail: Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Analytical Skills: Critical thinking and analytical abilities to assess legal and business implications and solve problems.
  • Collaboration: Ability to work collaboratively with attorneys, business stakeholders, and external parties in a fast-paced environment, demonstrating flexibility and adaptability to changing priorities and deadlines.
  • The accidents and events that lead to claims can be very disruptive and stressful for our business partners. The ability to walk them through the claims process in a professional and reassuring manner is an essential trait.
  • Proven ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects and workflow to meet deadlines.
  • Versatility, flexibility, and a willingness to work within constantly changing priorities with enthusiasm.
