Metro Transit is one of the country's largest transit systems, employs more than 3,000 people, and prior to Covid provided more than 80 million rides a year through an integrated network of buses, light rail and commuter trains, as well as resources for those who carpool, vanpool, walk or bike in the Twin Cities.

Metro Transit's Engineering Department is responsible for the development and construction of Metro Transit's public and support facilities. In the support facility area, they plan, design, and construct improvements to the bus operations and maintenance facilities including, for example, replacement of existing equipment, improvements to the maintenance service bays, renovating operations support space, including building additions, and designing new facilities. Engineering and Facilities has built and maintains over 2 million square feet of office and industrial space.

How your work would contribute to our organization and the Twin Cities region: As a Project Coordinator/Senior Project Coordinator/Principal Project Coordinator, you will be responsible for leading efforts related to natural systems sustainability and environmental systems management. The incumbent will play a key role in the development and implementation of Metro Transit's Sustainability Plan (MTSP) that aligns with the Council's CAWP and the State of Minnesota's Climate Action Framework. The MTSP will stretch beyond climate action and GHG emissions to identify and incorporate meaningful site environmental outcomes into our operations. Additionally, it will center the environmental justice lens outlined in CAWP and Imagine 2050 onto the agency's work.

This position is eligible for a hybrid (both remote and onsite) telework arrangement. Candidate's permanent residence must be in Minnesota or Wisconsin.


What you would do in this job

Sustainability Projects:

  • Collaborate across Metro Transit departments and with municipalities to support the objectives of the Climate Action Work Plan and Metro Transit Sustainability Plan.
  • Collaborate with municipalities and watershed districts to ensure stormwater BMPs comply with guidelines and ordinances.
  • Manage sustainable initiatives focusing on environmental justice, equity, and climate action.
  • Gather, analyze, and report data on utility billing, greenhouse gas emissions, and other sustainability efforts.
  • Creates impactful documentation of the agency's progress through written and visual depictions.
  • Co-lead the Environmental Management System program to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Develop and assist in RFQs/RFPs/IFBs for sustainability-related services.
  • Gather, evaluate, and format data from existing operations for reporting to required entities.
  • Determine sufficiency of data and develop new data definitions as required to create meaningful metrics for reporting progress.
  • Uses data and metrics to create communication documents and tools to aid policy makers, managers, and employees in monitoring progress and making operational decisions.
  • Leads or aids in the development and maintenance of sustainable guidelines and owner's project requirements such as but not limited to landscaping, irrigation, chloride management, and nitrogen fertilizer.

What education and experience are required for this job (minimum qualifications)

Project Coordinator
Any of the following combinations of related experience (in engineering, architecture, planning or related field) and completed education (degree field of study in Engineering, Architecture, Engineering Technology, Architectural Technology, Construction Technology, Planning or related field.)

  • A high school diploma and seven (7) years of experience.
  • Associate degree and five (5) years of experience.
  • Bachelor's degree and three (3) years of experience.
  • Master's degree and one (1) year of experience.

Senior Project Coordinator
Any of the following combinations of related experience (in transit or administration management, research, planning, statistics or engineering) and completed education (degree field of study in urban or transportation planning or related field)

  • A high school diploma and eight (8) years of experience.
  • Associate degree and six (6) years of experience.
  • Bachelor's degree and four (4) years of experience.
  • Master's degree and two (2) years of experience.

Principal Project Coordinator:
Any of the following combinations of related experience ( project management experience on large and complex capital projects ) and completed education (degree field of study in Engineering, Architecture, Engineering Technology, Architectural Technology, Construction Technology, Urban or Transportation Planning or closely related field )

  • A high school diploma and eight (9) years of experience.
  • Associate degree and six (7) years of experience.
  • Bachelor's degree and four (5) years of experience.
  • Master's degree and two (3) years of experience.

What additional skills and experience would be helpful in this job (desired qualifications):
  • Experience in project management and coordination of multiple disciplines.
  • Experience and technical knowledge in the preparation of plans and specifications.
  • Experience in leading and facilitating meetings with very complex and detailed materials.
  • Demonstrated experience in cultural competence and working with diverse communities and stakeholders.
What knowledge, skills, and abilities you should have within the first six months on the job.
  • Skilled in project management: including developing and leading effective project teams, problem solving, facilitating, scheduling, presenting reports, and contract administration.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, Teams, and Notebook applications is desired, as is familiarity with Outlook.
  • Skilled communicator, oral, written and interpersonal proficiency a must. Ability to edit and format documents written by multiple authors into a cohesive and smooth flowing product.
  • Demonstrable experience in researching sustainability and climate related issues and topics, ability to assess potential impacts, evaluating alternatives, and formally or informally making recommendations.
  • Ability to provide timely and accurate client services to interagency stakeholders, the public and other agencies.

What your work environment would be:
Work is primarily performed in a standard office work environment however there will be some travel from primary work site to other sites and to Metro Transit facilities, and occasionally out of state. At times incumbent in this position will be exposed to outdoor weather conditions, near moving parts and equipment, fumes and airborne particles and electrical items.
