The UCI Law Clinics have long collaborated with community groups in Orange County on a range of issues facing low-income communities. Santa Ana in particular has been a site of vibrant organizing and innovation by domestic workers, tenants, leaders in the immigrant community, and others. Many of the groups at the center of this innovation consider El Centro their cultural, artistic, and political home. In 2021, the UCI Law Clinics established a satellite space at El Centro to allow the Law School to enhance its collaborations with El Centro groups and facilitate improved access for clients who otherwise have been difficult to reach. The Legal Empowerment Attorney would provide an on-site presence for the UCI Law Clinics, delivering much needed legal services and counseling while joining with other stakeholders to develop a vision for sustainable, long-term, reciprocity-based partnership grounded in community members' lived experience and subject-matter expertise.

Your Role on the Team

Applies professional concepts to provide a variety of legal counsel to community members and organizations. Requires broad knowledge of multiple legal disciplines including but not limited to housing, immigration, worker's rights, and other possible areas of law. Regularly works on moderate issues where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors. Exercises judgment and independence in selecting methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results. Works on highly confidential and sensitive matters.

Additional responsibilities include:
- Providing research support and advice to community organizers at the El Centro space working on related policy initiatives;
- Developing innovative know-your-rights and self-help materials to accompany community organizing efforts;
- Developing an effective intake and referral process for community members seeking legal services from the UCI Law Clinics (and training others on the same);
- Providing on-site activities coordination for the UCI Law Clinics;
- Working closely with groups housed at the El Centro space to develop a long-term plan for collaboration and legal support, including program objectives, timelines, budgets, guiding principles, and needs assessment if necessary; and

The position will interface with a range of UCI Law Clinics, but likely work most closely with the Workers, Law, and Organizing Clinic and Immigrant Rights Clinic. The position may also receive training and mentorship support from the Public Law Center, particularly in the area of housing law.
