Role
Manages environmental planning and permitting activities to ensure the company complies with applicable regulatory agency requirements. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.
Essential Responsibilities
- Manages environmental permitting and compliance program elements and activities to maintain compliance with applicable regulatory agency requirements as well as with Company environmental policy including management by objectives (MBOs).
- Ensures site plans and permits are current and operations are in compliance. Obtains permits and entitlements for operations and ensures that all necessary reports and information is provided timely and accurately to local governments, regulatory agencies, and Company management.
- Maintains current knowledge of all relevant laws and regulations applying to environmental compliance in the waste management field.
- Monitors Company activities to ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations. Includes, but is not limited to, conducting internal environmental audits, environmental tests, analysis, and observations, evaluating results and making recommendations as necessary for maintaining compliance with regulatory agency requirements and with applicable laws.
- Provides oral and written advice and direction on environmental permitting and regulatory compliance issues to staff, operations team, and General Managers. Works closely with Corporate Environment and Planning Department and with Group and General Managers to identify and implement permitting and compliance initiatives that advance Company environmental and business objectives. Participates in managing complex regulatory/financial/technical aspects of the environmental program including work with regulators, consultants, and counsel.
- Provides functional direction/supervision and training of local and regional personnel responsible for environmental permitting, monitoring, and compliance.
- Communicates orally and in writing with regulators and accompanies them during inspections. Interacts with and responds to regulatory agencies as needed.
- Represents Company in community and local government communications related to environmental and waste management matters.
- Drafts compliance guidelines and procedures, participates in preparation of permit applications and permit development/review processes as appropriate.
- Ensures compliance with the requirements of the ROCT System.
- Travels to multiple locations for on-site visits.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Possession of a high school diploma or GED.
- Bachelor's degree preferred.
- Six years of related experience in environmental program management and managing employees preferred.
- Experience with solid and/or hazardous waste.
- Valid Driver's License.
- Principles of employee training, supervision and evaluation.
- Supervisory techniques, resource allocation, planning and budgeting.
