Research Intern (PZ50) Department of Ophthalmology Full/Part Time Status: Full Time Percent Time:100% Position Description: The Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Science is seeking a motivated Research Intern who is interested in Ophthalmology to assist in pre-clinical animal model studies and human clinical research activities for the Department of Ophthalmology. Duties of the Research Intern position to include:
- Perform and help design translational research studies using mouse models of human disease.
- Perform mouse husbandry and general laboratory organization.
- Perform experiments in mice utilizing electroretinogram, visually guided swim assay, OCT, histology, intraocular injections, and other experiments as needed.
- Assist with and perform standard ophthalmic procedures for clinical research trials; data collection and maintain databases; assist in participant recruitment, enrollment and appointment scheduling; assist coordinators with using specialized ophthalmic equipment and provide research team support, assist in writing manuscripts and creating figures for publication.
- Follow all departmental, institutional and federal regulations related to approved human subject research and the conduct of clinical research. Obtain certification for specific human research conduct of clinical trials (CITI Training, or protocol specific).
- Demonstrate a willingness to carry out responsibilities and to have a positive approach to accomplishing work, and a communications skillset for interactions with patients, staff and administration.

Immediate supervision is received from department clinical trials specialist and laboratory Post-Doctoral Fellow and other laboratory personnel. Education Requirement: The candidate should have a Bachelor's degree in Biochemistry, Biology, or related fields, and/or an MD degree. Required Qualifications: Excellent oral and written communication skills; strong organizational skills; must be proficient with computer software including MicroSoft Office, Adobe Acrobat and Excel database software; prior experience in a medical or research laboratory setting; knowledge of medical terminology. Desirable Qualifications:
- Experience in Ophthalmology clinics is desirable.
- Experience or previous course work in the research process.
