Primary Function of Organizational Unit
In support of the mission of the NCCU School of Law, the Law Library provides information services and resources that promote the performance of high-quality legal research activities by our faculty, students, staff, and community. The Collection Services unit acquires, organizes, describes, and maintains the Law Library's information resources, ensuring our patrons can find and access the information they need. The unit prioritizes patron needs, strives for accuracy balanced with efficiency, embraces new technology, and values communication and teamwork.
Primary Purpose of Position
Provide administrative, cataloging, and acquisitions support for the Collection Services unit of the Law Library. The ideal candidate is outstanding at detailed organizational tasks, fluent with technology, great at communicating, and an enthusiastic learner and collaborator. Under the direction of the Cataloging and Metadata Librarian, the Collection Services Associate plays a vital role in managing the collection, ensuring the discoverability of resources through accurate cataloging, and assisting with the acquisition of materials to enhance our library's offerings.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of the functions of a library and of a technical services unit. Familiarity with cataloging standards (e.g., MARC, RDA) and integrated library systems is desirable.
  • Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills. This includes the ability to adhere to detailed procedures consistently and accurately, and ask questions when details are amiss.
  • Comfort and fluency with computer work, including Microsoft Office. Confidence in learning new technology skills. Ability to apply existing knowledge to independently figuring out new computer-based tasks.
  • Ability to effectively collaborate and communicate in a team-oriented environment.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to the changing nature of library work.
  • Must be a self-starter and able to manage the workload, prioritize tasks, and organize time.
  • Strong service orientation and ability to work with diverse populations.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written.

Minimum Education/Experience
High school diploma or equivalency and two years of experience in library services, office support, or related field; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Required Competency Knowledge - Program
Duties
Provide cataloging and processing of materials in various formats to build library collections that support the objectives of the Law School and meet the needs of faculty, students, and staff.

  • Work in the integrated library system's catalog to receive new continuing resources, add new volumes and titles, edit and enhance records, and withdraw discarded items.
  • Use OCLC systems to locate, identify, and import appropriate bibliographic records (copy cataloging).
  • Shelve newly acquired materials after cataloging and processing.
  • Assist with electronic resource management by performing routine batch uploads of e-resource bibliographic records.
  • Report statistics to supervisor.



Required Competency Analysis and Decision Making
Duties
Perform collection maintenance to ensure accessibility of the library's collections and assist with the operation of the service desk providing customer service to library users.

  • Coordinate the shelving and filing of new continuing resource items and the withdrawal or relocation of superseded items, including Federal Depository Library Program items.
  • Perform or manage book processing tasks (stamping, labeling, tagging, etc.).
  • Participate in shelf reading and shifting the collections, as assigned.
  • Assist law school students, faculty, staff, and public patrons with basic circulation services and inquiries related to the collection.
  • Perform other tasks related to service desk operations, as assigned.



Required Competency Knowledge - Program and Organization
Duties
Perform acquisitions tasks, which include placing and tracking orders, managing contracts, and issuing cancelations to ensure the receipt of all library materials.

  • Identify and resolve errors.
  • Update acquisitions records in the integrated library system.
  • Assist with providing monthly report of acquisitions processing statistics to supervisor.

Collaborate with the Cataloging and Metadata Librarian on training, data cleanup, system configuration, and creation of workflows and documentation for integrated library system.
