Job Summary |
This is a two- year limited term position and is funded from external sources. Continuation of employment is contingent upon availability of funds.
The Crop, Soils, & Environmental Sciences department at Auburn University is seeking a detail-oriented Weed Science Research Assistant to join our innovative research team, Weed Bionomics Lab. In this position, you will support the development and execution of research projects aimed at understanding weed dynamics, management practices, and their impact on agricultural systems. Your work will contribute to sustainable agricultural practices and enhance our understanding of weed ecology. |
Essential Functions |
Essential Functions include the following:
- Assist in the design and implementation of field and greenhouse experiments focused on weed ecology and management in Auburn and other AU research stations
- Collect, analyze, and interpret experimental data across multiple projects involving multiple people
- Safely prepare and administer chemical treatment applications using spray equipment, according to product label instructions, for weed control, and ensure worker and environmental safety
- Order research supplies, and work with administrative staff and companies to accurately track the invoices and receipts
- Safely transport equipment to jobsites and between jobsites using trucks and trailers
- Collaborate with team members, Auburn University research station managers, and external partners to ensure the success of research initiatives
- Conduct literature reviews to support research initiatives and identify knowledge gaps
- Prepare comprehensive reports and presentations on research findings if needed
- Maintain accurate records of experimental protocols, procedures, and results

Minimum Qualifications |
Education and Experience:
Level I: Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in Weed Science, Agronomy, Horticulture, or closely related field at the time employment begins; No experience required.
Level II: Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in Weed Science, Agronomy, Horticulture, or closely related field at the time employment begins plus 2 years of experience in research practices and protocols relevant to the position.
Substitutions allowed for Experience:
When a candidate has the required education, but lacks the required experience, they may normally apply additional appropriate education toward the experience requirement, at a rate of one (1) year relevant education per year of required experience.
Salary commensurate with education and experience. |
Minimum Skills, License, and Certifications
Minimum Skills and Abilities |
Must have an understanding of weed biology and management, experience with data collection and analysis, including statistical software, excellent written and verbal communication skills, and ability to work independently and collaboratively in a diverse environment. |
Minimum Technology Skills |
Familiarity with Microsoft Office, Excel, and statistical software |
Minimum License and Certifications |
- Must have a valid driver's license or the ability to obtain one prior to the start date
- Must have a pesticide applicator license for Alabama or ability to obtain one prior to the start date

- Experience in conducting field research and experimental design
- Familiarity with agricultural practices and integrated weed management
- Proficiency in using software tools for data analysis (e.g., R, SAS, or Python)
