Primary Responsibilities

The Environmental Sciences and Planning Business Class Leader for FL-PR AL-MS clients and projects provides leadership and direction to a team that includes wetland and vegetation scientists, terrestrial biologists, cultural resource specialists, permitting specialists, NEPA practitioners, and other multi-disciplinary staff. The Business Class Leader also coordinates with other area, regional, and national managers within the company to advance technical excellence and support delivery of HDR services. The position will involve working closely with HDR leadership to drive program development in the area. The candidate must have a strong technical understanding of their primary area of practice and experience in other aspects of environmental consulting pertaining to water-related programs, power, oil and gas, mining, industrial, and transportation. The candidate will also support the goals and vision of HDR through regular communication between the local management team, other technical groups and business development managers within the company. The individual will be responsible for an aspect of day-to-day operations of the area ES&P team and provide consulting and project management leadership. The candidate should possess a balanced portfolio of skills to manage and grow a multi-disciplinary sector, including business development which requires networking and developing leads, establishing/managing client relationships, and strategic thinking for both our clients and internal programs. It also includes working with the business development managers to identify and promote cross sector opportunities, forecast market changes and anticipate their impacts to clients; lead pre-proposal visitations, and support proposal preparation with technical and marketing staff by providing client-centric input and feedback; and giving presentations to clients and project stakeholders.

In the role of Environmental Services Sciences and Planning Business Class Area Leader, we'll count on you to:



  • Establish a vision for the FL-PR AL-MS Environmental Sciences and Planning Business Class in coordination with the broader Environmental Sciences and Planning and Area leadership, as well as regional and national Environmental Sciences and Planning leadership.
  • Provides leadership/direction in the execution of strategy and initiatives based on needs of the ES&P Cross Sector within the FL-PR AL-MS Area.
  • Take responsibility for area coordination, monitoring and improvement of technical competencies of business class staff and products to meet client needs and market drivers, all within direction and goals of business class plans
  • Supervise and coordinate the activities of assigned sector; recommend measures to improve performance and increase efficiency; manage staff utilization and profitability.
  • Track personnel actions and staff development including support for recruiting and hiring and training measures for assigned staff.
  • Lead sector quality control, including assurance that quality work is planned and organized through a pro-active project management system, and implements corrective measures as needed.
  • Provide hands-on mentoring and team participation to create a bridge between technical resources and client requirements and ensure there is appropriate leadership and supervision engaged on technical assignments.
  • Project Manager and/or Task Lead for large-scale NEPA and/or federal/state permitting projects.
  • Work with client development leadership to prioritize the marketing and business development efforts of the organization and prioritizes business efforts that provide maximum return on investment across all business groups.
  • Partners with Departments and Market Sectors to maintain client relationships and service levels, implement strategies, and elevating the environment practice within the FL-PR AL-MS Area.
  • Champion a quality-culture within the sector organization, and within production teams, serving the sector's clients.
  • Manage skills and identify gaps to facilitate project delivery and growth initiatives across all business groups.
  • Act as client manager for select clients.
  • Lead risk management activities for both contract reviews and project deliverables.
  • Direct the technical messaging and professional attendance at professional organizations and industry events.
  • Promote the Drive to Zero culture where safety of staff and clients is paramount.
  • Interpret, implement, and enforce company policies.
  • Perform other duties as needed.


Preferred Qualifications



  • 15 years of experience in NEPA environmental documentation, regulatory compliance and permitting and familiarity with the suite of technical disciplines represented in the group (e.g. wetlands, vegetation, soils, cultural, wildlife, and GIS).
  • The candidate should demonstrate strong conceptual, organizational, problem solving, research abilities, and possess a comprehensive understanding of federal and state regulatory policy.
  • Experience developing plans, writing proposals, developing scopes of work, budgets, and schedules for complex environmental projects with multidisciplinary teams and multi-agency efforts.
  • Must have the ability to productively interact with various teams and have excellent organizational, project management and communication both written and verbal skills.
  • Proven track record in developing, mentoring and managing staff is desired.
  • Proficiency with MS Office suite, strong people skills, excellent written and verbal communications skills.
  • Actively engaged in professional or industry associations to enhance HDR technical expertise and brand
  • Preference given to local candidates


Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in a Professional, Architecture, Engineering or closely related field
  • 10 years of experience
  • Committed to quality, improvement and HDR values
  • Maintains a professional or engineering registration and has related technical experience
  • Experienced in development and management of diverse teams
  • Works cooperatively with other area business class leaders, operations managers, technical directors and marketing managers on business class efforts
  • An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture is a must
