The John Chambers College of Business at West Virginia University, a leading R1 research institution, seeks a highly motivated and innovative Research Scholar to join our Kendrick Center for an Ethical Economy to explore the ethical and dimensions of Bitcoin and related blockchain technologies. The successful candidate will conduct cutting-edge research at the intersection of philosophy, ethics, economics, and technology, contributing to the understanding of Bitcoin's societal, moral, and policy implications. This position offers an opportunity to engage with a vibrant interdisciplinary community, publish high-impact scholarship, and shape public and academic discourse on cryptocurrency ethics.

Key Responsibilities



  • Research Excellence: Design and execute original research projects examining the ethical implications of Bitcoin, including topics such as decentralization, financial inclusion, privacy, environmental impact, regulatory frameworks, and social justice.
  • Publication and Dissemination: Publish peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, and policy papers in top-tier academic journals and present findings at national and international conferences.
  • Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Collaborate with faculty and researchers in philosophy, economics, computer science, law, and public policy to foster cross-disciplinary insights into cryptocurrency ethics.
  • Public Engagement: Communicate research findings to broader audiences through public lectures, op-eds, and media appearances to influence policy and public understanding of Bitcoin's ethical challenges.
  • Grant Development: Pursue external funding opportunities to support research initiatives and contribute to the development of the Kendrick Center for an Ethical Economy's research portfolio.

Qualifications

Required



  • Ph.D. in Philosophy, Ethics, Economics, Public Policy, or a related field by the start date.
  • Demonstrated expertise in ethical theory, applied ethics, or philosophy of technology, with a focus on cryptocurrency, blockchain, or financial systems.
  • Strong record of scholarly publications or potential for high-impact research output.
  • Ability to engage with technical aspects of Bitcoin and blockchain technology (e.g., cryptography, consensus mechanisms) at a conceptual level.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for both academic and public audiences.


Preferred



  • Experience with interdisciplinary research bridging humanities, social sciences, and technology.
  • Familiarity with Bitcoin's economic, environmental, or regulatory dimensions (e.g., energy consumption of mining, monetary policy implications).
  • Record of securing external funding or contributing to grant proposals.
