The Veterans Advocacy Law Clinic at the West Virginia University College of Law seeks a fellow to start on or after July 1, 2025. The Fellow position is a two-year appointment with the opportunity for reappointment based on performance and funding availability.

The Clinic represents veterans and their dependents with consumer legal claims, including issues with predatory lending and fraud. The Clinic represents veterans throughout West Virginia, with a particular focus on those in rural areas. The Clinic enrolls between 6 - 12 law students every semester.

What You'll Do



  • Work with the Co-Director of the Clinic to advocate for veterans and to build the Clinic's consumer justice practice.
  • Focus on supporting students and legislative advocacy surrounding unaccredited individuals attempting to charge a fee to veterans for assisting veterans' applications for disability benefits.
  • Work to educate legislators about the fraudulent activities of these unaccredited agents and will assist student-attorneys using consumer protection laws to oppose such companies.
  • Assist to supervise law students and will collaborate on outreach efforts into rural communities throughout West Virginia.

Qualifications

Candidates must possess a JD degree from an ABA-accredited law school and either admission to the West Virginia Bar or the ability to gain admission to the West Virginia Bar within 6 months of starting the position.

Preference will be given to individuals with experience: advocating on behalf of veterans and West Virginia consumers; representing clients in civil legal proceedings; supervising students in a clinical setting; or engaging in outreach to low-income and vulnerable populations, especially in rural areas, and legislative advocacy.
