The Department of Insurance provides a centralized organization within the university to develop and direct a wide array of insurance programs aimed at reducing and managing the risk of loss by ensuring appropriate insurance coverages are in place. The Insurance operation encompasses the entire university population, operations, programs and real estate property across the state.

As the Insurance Risk Manager, you'll lead the design and execution of the university's enterprise-wide risk and insurance programs. You'll work closely with key state and federal partners-including the North Carolina Department of Insurance, FEMA, the NC Department of Public Safety, and more-to ensure the university remains protected and prepared. You'll also serve as the University HIPAA Privacy Officer, giving you a uniquely influential seat at the table in matters of compliance and data protection.

What You'll Do:
Risk Strategy & Insurance Leadership

  • Lead the university's institutional risk management program.
  • Oversee procurement and management of insurance coverage in alignment with state requirements.
  • Serve as an expert advisor on conventional and enterprise risk management.


Program & Claims Administration

  • Manage claims, negotiate settlements, and support investigations related to liability, property, and injury.
  • Collaborate with external partners across federal and state agencies to ensure timely and effective outcomes.

Supervision & Team Development

  • Lead a team of two Insurance Program Specialists.
  • Mentor, evaluate, and guide your team toward professional growth and excellence.
  • Foster a culture of accountability and learning.

Communication & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Serve as the key communicator for insurance programs and risk policies across campus.
  • Translate complex regulations into clear guidance for a varied audience.
  • Partner with the Office of General Counsel to review contracts and support enterprise risk planning.
  • Develop web content, training sessions, and outreach to raise awareness and drive compliance.

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree and three years of experience in the area of assignment, of which at least one is supervisory or in a lead-worker capacity; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Other Required Qualifications

  • Extensive knowledge of Insurance programs aimed to reduce risk.
  • Extensive knowledge of local, state and federal regulations regarding to Insurance and risk management.
  • Ability to make business decisions independently and in an appropriate timely manner.
  • Highly knowledgeable with supervisory practices and skills in supervising other.
  • Ability to identify problems and changing requirements.
  • Considerable knowledge of strategic planning methodologies and practices when it come to reducing risk.
  • Must stay up to date of any changes as to matters of Insurance and Risk Management and gain functional knowledge through experience.
  • Must be able to mentor, coach, and manage the total competencies of staff.
  • Ability to seek sources and opportunity for employee training and growth.
  • Ability to identify and address quality monitoring and performance improvement issues, as well as, discipline issues
  • Ability to review and approve documents and reports of more complex or unique issues and effectively articulate written conclusions.
  • Ability to anticipate and remain alert to potentially problematic situations.
  • Ability to resolve unusual problems.
  • Ability to ensure implementation of program policy and procedure changes.
  • Must have the analytical ability to manage and understand the technical requirements of insurance and claims.
  • Must be able to negotiate on the behalf of the university with officials at state and federal levels, as well as private industry.
  • Must maintain a high-level of expertise in a very broad range of insurance issues and concerns.
  • Must independently develop risk management programs and interact, advise and consult with deans, directors, and department heads, as well as provide technical guidance to all departmental staff and students.
  • Must have working knowledge of legal principles of civil law and torts.
  • Requires well developed communication skills and reputation as a team player.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior work in a risk management capacity and/or in insurance operations with training and experience that includes:

    • Claims handing principles and practices
    • Evaluating commercial underwriting risks and understanding of underwriting principals
    • Knowledge of management of evolving risks
    • Working knowledge of HIPAA



Required License(s) or Certification(s)

  • Valid driver's license required.
  • Valid NC driver's license within 60 days of hire.
  • Professional designations encompassing either ARM - Associate in Risk Management or CPCU - Charted Property Causality Underwriter.
