Automotive Mechanic

Requirements

The Automotive Mechanic performs journey level skilled work involving the repair and preventive maintenance of a wide variety of vehicles and other engine-powered equipment. They exercise independent judgement under minimum supervision to carry out preventive maintenance and repairs, determining the causes of vehicle and equipment operating problems by tracing, locating, and diagnosing defects. The incumbent selects and safely uses proper tools, equipment, devices, manuals, references and efficient procedures and techniques. Making permanent and timely repairs to equipment and vehicles, additional duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Work on gasoline, diesel, and alternatively fueled equipment, including hydraulic, pneumatic, mechanical, electrical, electronic and computer controlled utility systems, controls, and features.
  • Tear down components and assemblies on vehicles by removing parts such as pistons, valves, bearings, gears and cylinders.
  • Thoroughly test equipment and vehicles after maintenance/repair work is completed, connecting, meshing, aligning, and adjusting items and systems to assure proper operation of the computer system or vehicle.
  • Requisition parts based on the vehicles diagnostics and manufacturer's specifications or as directed by the supervisor.
  • Work independently, and when required with other mechanics to perform all preventive maintenance and repair assignments in accordance with technical manuals, illustrations, specifications, diagrams, schematics and similar guides.
  • Ensure that work passes performance tests administered by the lead Mechanic, reading and interpreting sketches, specifications, and services manuals.
  • Complete and submit forms and documents as required to ensure that information is properly recorded and stored.
  • Record actions taken in response to work orders and other requests, entering such information on forms, documents, and/or into a computerized record system.
  • Remain up-to-date on department, University, and applicable trade codes and regulations.


Work Interactions

This position reports directly to Garage Supervisor along with five other mechanic positions. The incumbent's work is limited to the shift assigned and provides and receives information and instruction from the supervisor or designee. The incumbent's work constitutes a direct service of the department in ensuring comfortable, safe and clean equipment for the University.

Requirements and Qualifications
  • HS diploma or equivalent required
  • 1-5 years or equivalent experience in a repair facility
  • Requires any combination of technical education and experiences equivalent to years of verifiable experience in problem diagnosis, repair and inspection of a variety of automotive vehicles and engine-powered equipment
  • Must be able to perform technical trades work in maintaining and repairing Diesel Buses, Automobiles, trucks and other engine powered equipment; This includes utility carts, lawnmowers, generators and other small engine equipment
  • Must be able to follow manufacture's repair manuals and use hand and specialty tools
  • Must be proficient in Automotive and transit Air conditioning systems, air brakes, emissions devices and fuel injection systems
  • Must be able to diagnose and understand electrical schematics use Volt meter and computer scan tools
  • Must be CFC certified in AC and possess Class B CDL driver's license
  • ASE certification a plus
