Job Description

Description of Role: The Director of Attendance and Behavioral Supports (MTSS Focus) leads and collaborates with district and school-level teams to ensure the effective implementation of Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) with a primary focus on improving student attendance, behavior, and engagement. The Director plays a critical role in strengthening student connection to school, reducing chronic absenteeism, improving school climate, and ensuring equitable outcomes for all students. This position reports to the Assistant Superintendent of Student Support Services and works closely with the Office of Teaching & Learning and the Office of Planning & Accountability.

Role Responsibilities:

Systems Leadership

  • Collaborate with the Director of Student Intervention Services, Manager of Data & Information, and building leaders to operationalize MTSS frameworks related to student attendance and behavior districtwide.
  • Develop, monitor, and refine districtwide systems for promoting regular student attendance and positive behavioral supports.
  • Lead implementation and continuous improvement of school-wide behavior systems such as Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS).
  • Ensure district alignment with current laws, regulations, and best practices regarding student attendance and behavioral interventions.
  • Supervise and provide leadership to Districtwide Attendance & Engagement Specialists.

Student & Family Engagement

  • Conduct home visits and outreach efforts to engage families in addressing chronic absenteeism and behavioral concerns.
  • Design and implement family-centered intervention strategies; provide appropriate referrals to community-based organizations and services.
  • Work closely with McKinney-Vento Liaisons to support the needs of students experiencing housing instability.
  • Serve as a liaison between schools, families, and community agencies to strengthen student attendance, engagement, and school connectedness.

Data Analysis & Reporting

  • Collect, analyze, and interpret student attendance and behavior data to inform school and district-level preventative strategies (Tier 1&2).
  • Provide actionable reports and presentations to school staff, district leadership, and families on attendance and behavior trends.
  • Develop and monitor key performance indicators to track progress and adjust practices as needed.
  • Support School-Based Support Teams (SBST) with data-informed planning and interventions.

Professional Development & Capacity Building

  • Develop and lead professional learning and training for school administrators and staff on evidence-based attendance and engagement strategies.
  • Facilitate training on behavioral intervention frameworks, restorative practices, and family engagement strategies.
  • Promote the use of evidence-based programs to improve school climate, student behavior, and attendance outcomes.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Follow district protocols for student withdrawal and transfers.
  • Collaborate with external agencies such as Child Protective Services and Probation as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned aligned with the mission of the Office of Student Support Services.

Reports To: Assistant Superintendent of Student Support Services

Job Qualifications
  • Master's Degree required.
  • Valid New York State School District Leader (SDL) or School District Administrator (SDA) certification required.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of building leadership experience in a public education setting; urban school district experience highly preferred.
  • Demonstrated success in implementing MTSS frameworks with a strong emphasis on attendance and behavioral support.
  • Experience collaborating with families and community organizations to support student success.
  • Proven ability to analyze data and drive improvement strategies at the school and district level.
