The MSL (Medical Science Liaison) Director is a member of a field-based team of scientists who function as an extension of the Medical Affairs organization. The MSL Director will serve in both leadership and tactical roles for the field team. As a member of the Medical Affairs extended leadership team, this position will help guide the development, execution and adjustment of the overall medical affairs strategy. The MSL Director will support the National MSL Lead / Head while still maintaining responsibilities for developing and enhancing professional relationships with medical thought leaders involved in various phases of product development. The MSL Director will have accountability for an assigned geographic region through MSL direct reports, along with their own territories, and will pull through execution of the medical plan with external HCPs. This is a remote/field based role which may require up to 50% travel including overnight trips. The MSL Director should reside in the Eastern or Central time zone.
ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Develop/maintain medical expertise and a strong understanding of clinical practice in areas of scientific interest for Phathom Pharmaceuticals. Assist with the reporting of field insights regarding product characteristics and therapeutic area development.
- Use national and regional medical plans to develop and align the tactical plan for each MSL’s geography of responsibility.
- Support educational meetings focused on acid-related GI disorders. Interact with HCP speakers to provide briefings around compliance, product information, clinical and scientific data, and support development of presentations.
- Function as a player/manager thereby assisting in the management and optimization of a regional MSL team while also holding MSL accountability for their own geographic region.
- Serve as expert field resource that will be mobilized for Executive Encounters and serve as back up for Payor presentations and Speaker Training Presentations.
- Proven skills as an effective team player who can participate in leadership discussions, present positions in a professional manner.
- Ability to partner with key internal stakeholders to understand Phathom’s key objectives.
Organizational Impact
- Manage and develop all MSLs within an assigned region including hiring, field training, evaluation, collection of metrics and review of insights, development and performance management in alignment with Phathom corporate strategies and objectives.
- Provide strong day to day leadership to understand and motivate their region to achieve scientifically identified objectives which are driven by overall corporate goals while using objective and subjective measurements to enable evidence-based decision making.
- Report to the Head of Field Medical and institute and evolve a culture of entrepreneurial spirit and sense of ownership of individual MSL geographies.
- Maintain their own MSL responsibilities and accountabilities for their specific territories
- Ensure that all interactions and activities in the region comply with Phathom business guidance, policies, and SOPs, OIG, ACCME, FDA, and Pharma guidelines/policies.
- Interpret and translate national strategies and POA into regional POA, including the development and execution of regional opinion leader and clinician development strategies and then guiding/assisting MSLs in tactical execution for their individual geographies.
- Ensure MSLs provide appropriate clinical presentations and/or information in response to unsolicited questions (as appropriate) in academic, community, managed care and healthcare provider settings.
- Assist to evolve the MSL team into a value based organizational model.
- Coordinate within Medical Affairs to appropriately deploy MSLs in the region to respond to unsolicited questions while managing regional capacity.
- Evolve customer centric scientific engagement with clinicians who treat patients by engaging in true scientific exchange focused on addressing educational gaps.
- Clearly communicate the national, regional, and territory plans, objectives, and POA; define, clarify and manage the regional team priorities
- Promote collaboration within the team, across work groups and with customers.
- Represent the MSL function on US Medical Affairs leadership teams as assigned.
- Assist the Head of Field Medical in the development of strategic initiatives and tracking execution against them through use of objective and subjective metrics.
Scientific/Technical Expertise
- Maintain the required MSL scientific and technical expertise requirements and competencies including but not limited to:
- Expert in Phathom products within franchise portfolio and disease states.
- Knowledge of competitive products and how they fit into algorithms; with management/mentorship support, solidify an understanding of the GI therapeutic area.
- Excellent communicator; able to persuasively convey both ideas and data, verbally and in writing and presentations.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
- Advanced degree in life sciences (MD, PharmD, PhD, PA-C, DNP) required.
- Minimum of 7 years of pharmaceutical industry experience with a minimum of 5 years working in a field-based medical/Medical Science Liaison capacity.
- Previous people management experience preferred.
- Product launch experience required.
- GI Therapeutic experience highly desirable.
- Good understanding of the clinical development process and the ICH-GCP guidelines.

Annual Base Salary: $225,000 - $260,000
