Appalachian State University operates the App State Academy at Middle Fork.
The Exceptional Children's Behavior Support Assistant provides supplemental behavioral support to identified students with disabilities whose behavioral or emotional needs interfere with their participation in school or access to instruction.
The assistant will work directly with individual students and small groups, implement student-specific behavioral strategies, support students during transitions and periods of escalation, assist with classroom reentry, and collect progress-monitoring data. The goal of the position is to help students remain engaged in school, develop appropriate replacement and self-regulation skills, and become more independent.

The Behavior Support Assistant reports to the Director of Student Support.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Establish supportive and appropriate relationships with identified students.
  • Provide individual and small-group behavioral support.
  • Teach and reinforce self-regulation, communication, coping, social-emotional, and replacement-behavior skills.

  • Provide planned, transitional, and short-term crisis support based on student needs.
  • Support students during classroom instruction, transitions, arrival, dismissal, lunch, recess, enrichment, and other school activities.
  • Recognize early signs of escalation and use approved prevention and de-escalation strategies.
  • Help students return to instruction following behavioral escalation or temporary removal from the classroom.
  • Implement visual schedules, reinforcement systems, check-in/check-out procedures, regulation spaces, and other identified supports.
  • Assist students with academic activities when behavioral needs interfere with their access to instruction.
  • Support students in developing independence and gradually reduce adult assistance as appropriate.
  • Observe students across school settings and identify patterns, triggers, and effective supports.
  • Collect and maintain accurate daily data on interventions, student behavior, instructional removals, and student progress.
  • Assist with data collection for Functional Behavior Assessments and Behavior Intervention Plans.
  • Share progress-monitoring information with the Director of Student Support and educational teams.
  • Communicate student progress and concerns promptly and professionally.
  • Model student-specific behavioral strategies for teachers, instructional assistants, and other staff.
