General Position Summary: Provide assistance in network planning, engineering, and development of network technical standards. Diagnose and troubleshoot network, device, and data communications problems, install and replace network systems. Produce and analyze network performance reports. Participate and contribute in technical discussions that involve network infrastructure enhancements. Interface with customers to understand their needs and articulate those needs to others.
Job Scope/Complexity: Position primarily focuses on entry level design/analysis projects for data and voice communication systems throughout the Johns Hopkins enterprise. Job complexity includes basic engineering/design/installation of data/voice communication systems, small to medium project management tasks, providing reviews and recommendations for new products, implementation and management of monitoring systems, and interfacing with customers to understand needs. Typically, this job is focused on a primary Johns Hopkins campus; however this position is expected to travel throughout Maryland/DC to cover any Johns Hopkins location as required.

NETWORK ANALYSIS AND DESIGN
- Manage small projects and program components (migration to new systems, location changes, scheduling, installations, product research, etc.) by following established guidelines/objectives to deliver service to customers.
- Create basic network infrastructure design or may assist with moderate network designs.
- Participate in development of project planning documents by using established departmental guidelines to deliver successful projects.
- Provide assistance through product research and/or working on a component of the overall design in network planning, network architecture and engineering with a focus on enhancing network and backbone infrastructure.
- Produces written reports (e.g., status reports, research results, project plans)by using standard tools to document analysis of a network architecture or system
- May give presentations on ideas, designs, plans, and/or solutions by using standard presentation tools to communicate to a variety of audiences.
INSTALLATION AND CONFIGURATION
- Install network systems (including wireless) by using established procedures and tools to meet the functional objectives of the business
- Implement changes by adhering to the change management policies and procedures for any given project. Communicate to all parties the nature, significance, and risk factors of the solution.
- Implement network management platforms (e.g., CISCO Works, HP Openview, What's Up Gold) that provide critical information used to manage and affect changes to network components by using provided solutions to deliver consistent network performance to customers.
MAINTAIN AND TROUBLESHOOT
- Troubleshoot moderate network malfunctions that may be isolated to a specific department, floor or building by using provided procedures and tools to deliver successful solutions to the customers.
- Investigate technical problems of moderate complexity with changing variables by using provided documentation and tools to provide root cause analysis and solutions to problems.
- Produce and analyze network performance reports by using tools provided to gain deeper understanding of network bandwidth and/or latency issues to justify upgrades or aid in troubleshooting.
- May maintain and manage a centralized collection of network traffic analysis data by using provided tools to deliver information to others on the team.
TECHNICAL COLLABORATION
- Perform in-depth research on specific network disciplines to provide feedback on best practices, industry trends, troubleshooting, etc. to team members.
- Interface with customers by meeting with them to understand needs and provide appropriate follow up with supervision.
Required Education: Two years college course work or trade school required. Additional experience can be substituted for education.
Required Experience: One year of related experience.
