Interfaith Initiatives for Health and Wellness in Eastern North Carolina

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This project explores the impact of interfaith initiatives on health outcomes in Eastern North Carolina. The aims and objective are to investigate how faith-based initiatives can help to provide solutions towards addressing problems arising from health disparities concerns in Eastern North Carolina communities. We will explore the benefits of collaboration among interfaith initiatives, healthcare experts, and policymakers as stakeholders in improving health outcomes.
The project will employ an ethnographic approach using community-based participatory research (
CBPR) framework to collect data. This will involve participant observation, interviews and focus group discussions to which the assistant will participate. The project will demonstrate the intersection between faith as a social determinant, health behavior, and policy development. The project's findings will be shared with the community stakeholders and published for broader dissemination.
POSITION SUMMARY: This project is community-based ethnographic participatory research. The employee is required to be available for 10 hours a week. The position will require the preparation and implementation of research field tool including recording field observation, taking photos, mentoring EC scholars, and any other supporting roles assigned by the principal investigator.
Specifically, the employee will assist in researching the subject matter, scheduling interviews and to participate the research discussions to be held at local interfaith congregations.
LOCATION OF RESEARCH AND SUPERVISOR INFORMATION: This project will be conducted at two locations -
ECU Brewster building room D303 and at Churches Outreach Network offices, 101 Evans Street in Greenville NC 27850
EXPECTATIONS:
- Attend Student Engagement and Outreach Scholars Academy (SEOSA) /HNRS 3100 course, workshops held on selected Friday afternoon (Fall semester only - at 1 - 3 pm, Sept. 6, 13, 20, 27, 10/18, 11/8, 15, 22, & 12/3)
- Work as a member of a research team (faculty mentor, EC Scholar, and Community Partner)
- Complete research tasks assigned by the faculty mentor.
SPECIFIC TASKS: This position is required to provide supports as follows:
- searching and documenting references,
- collecting data on the site (field observation, research conversation with adolescents, taking photos),
- managing the data (i.e., filing and coding)
- assisting data analysis, and
- mentoring EC scholars.
START AND END DATE: This position will run from August 19, 2025, to December 13, 2025, and continues from January 6 to April 30, 2026. The employee will be expected to be available in the morning (9 am to 12 pm, Monday through Friday) (Fall & Spring), and Friday afternoon 1 to 3 pm (Fall only).
REIMBURSEMENT: 10 hours/week, 15 weeks fall and 15 weeks spring. |
