West Virginia University
United States, West Virginia, Morgantown
Aug 15, 2025
Description

The Department of History in the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences at West Virginia University invites applications for the Stuart and Joyce Robbins Chair. This is a tenured, endowed position at either the associate or full professor level. We seek candidates with expertise in 20th-Century U.S. History who can demonstrate an interest and ability to train and mentor students in Appalachian History. The position begins August of 2026.

The Department of History serves over 7,000 students annually through general education and undergraduate and graduate classes. The department offers Bachelors degrees in History and Social Studies/Secondary Education, Masters degrees in History and Public History, Doctorate degrees in History, and coordinates a graduate certificate in Cultural Resource Management.

Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will teach graduate and undergraduate courses in 20th-century U.S. History as well as contribute to the department's offerings in Appalachian history. The normal teaching load for research productive faculty in History is two courses per semester, but an endowed chair typically carries a smaller load. The successful candidate is expected to establish a record of significant scholarly publications, and secure external research funding. The candidate will also be expected to serve the community, university, and profession.

Qualifications

Qualifications:

A Ph.D. or equivalent degree in History or a closely related field is required. In addition, applicants must have an excellent record of teaching, a record of significant scholarly publications, and evidence of the potential to secure external research funding. The record of teaching and research should merit both a grant of tenure at WVU and appointment as the Robbins Chair.

Application:

To apply, please visit https://careers.wvu.edu/career-opportunities and upload (1) a letter of application describing your research and teaching interests and abilities, (2) a curriculum vitae, and (3) a sample of scholarship. Reference letters may be requested at a later stage in the search process. For additional information please contact the Search Committee Chair, Jason Phillips, at Jason.Phillips@mail.wvu.edu.
