What You'll Do

IronArch is seeking an experienced Engineering Manager to serve as backend engineer on a project within the VA ecosystem, and also manage 3 - 5 engineers in a matrixed organization. The primary function of this role is performing as a backend engineer in an IC capacity, with roughly 20% of time allotted to the management of engineers.

We're looking for an experienced and versatile engineering manager who's also comfortable taking on some DevOps responsibilities. Our tech stack includes Java, Spring Boot, Kafka, Rails, GitHub Actions, DataDog, Docker, Kubernetes, and Helm. While experience with the entire stack is not required, we value engineers with proficiency in multiple languages and frameworks, and the ability to quickly learn new technologies.

On the people management side, you will also be responsible for managing 3-5 engineers. This includes checking on how their work is going, fostering professional development, providing technical mentorship, and meeting regularly with them. Some team members may support initiatives beyond the one you are staffed to, requiring adaptive leadership and resource management across a matrixed environment.

Key Responsibilities

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Design, build, and maintain backend services and APIs using Java, Spring Boot, Kafka, and Rails.
  • Contribute to CI/CD pipelines, monitoring, and infrastructure using GitHub Actions, DataDog, Docker, Kubernetes, and Helm.
  • Take the initiative to identify and tackle high-impact work, don't just wait for tickets, help define them.
  • Collaborate closely with the team to shape technical direction, propose solutions, and influence architecture decisions.
  • Break down and complete tickets efficiently while maintaining high code quality and test coverage.
  • Troubleshoot and debug production issues, ensuring system reliability and performance.
  • Participate actively in code reviews, technical discussions, and sprint planning.
  • Stay current with emerging tools and technologies, and apply them to improve the codebase and processes.

Leadership and Team Development

  • Manage and mentor 3-5 direct reports.
  • Provide career guidance, technical oversight, and workload balancing across team members who may support additional contracts.
Requirements
  • Public Trust or higher (ability to obtain and maintain required background investigation)

Preferred Experience

  • 5+ years of backend / full stack development using some of Java, Spring Boot, Kafka, Rails, GitHub Actions, DataDog, Docker, Kubernetes, or Helm.
  • 1+ years of people management, preferably in a matrixed environment.
  • Proven experience architecting and implementing CI/CD pipelines, automated testing frameworks, and secure code validation workflows.
  • Experience in government software delivery, including involvement in ATO preparation and continuous monitoring.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to translate technical complexity / features into impact for end users.
  • Familiarity with agile methodologies (Scrum, SAFe) and their application in modern federal DevSecOps environments.
