Our group expertise spans aerodynamics and fluids analysis, aerothermal and thermal modeling and analysis, combustion and heat transfer, infrared signature and scene generation & software development for air and missile defense applications. As Supervisor of the Aerodynamics and Fluids Analysis Section you will...

  • Be able to perform applied computational analysis using commercial and in-house CFD software to simulate the aerodynamic, plume, and aerothermal flight environments of missiles during launch, boost, midcourse, and glide portions of trajectories.
  • Generate complex numerical grids to handle large-scale problems involving detailed models of missiles, their components, and other complex configurations.
  • Manipulate and modify CAD models to be ready for mesh generation.
  • Compare predictions results with flight test data and literature.
  • Manage and maintain CFD software on High-Performance Computing Resources.
  • Participate in developing new Internal Research and Development (IRAD) ideas to innovative future weapon concepts.
  • Interact with project managers, sponsors, contractors and other APL staff to establish and maintain relationships and to provide critical contributions.
  • Document results in technical memoranda and papers; present findings and provide expert opinion in technical interchange meetings.
  • Inspire your Section staff and influence their products to enable innovative, affordable, and effective solutions to critical gaps.
  • Balance task loading amongst your staff and prioritize their tasks when deemed appropriate.
  • Ensure the proper execution of tasks, quality, and timeliness of technical products through the application of best research and engineering practices.
  • Actively engage and partner with Section staff to encourage presentation of their work in professional societies, publications in peer-reviewed journals, leadership within and outside the lab and help with their career development.
  • Develop reclassification letters, recognition awards, and the associated supportive documentation to formally recognize your staff and to promote their career development.
  • Lead the Section's efforts to recruit and hire highly qualified staff to meet sponsor demands by drafting personnel requisitions, interviewing candidates, and providing input for hiring decisions.
  • Support the Group through the implementation of Laboratory, Sector, and Branch strategies and policies.

Qualifications

You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...

  • Have a Master's degree in engineering, physics, mathematics, or a related field.
  • At least 5 years of experience in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD).
  • Have relevant experience in one or more of the following areas: grid generation, hypersonic flows, chemically reacting flows, solid rocket motors, nozzle flow, wind tunnel testing, and aerodynamic model development.
  • Have knowledge and experience with software management, grid engines, queueing systems, and parallel processing.
  • Have knowledge and experience with Linux clusters and scripting in Linux environments.
  • Have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Are a highly dynamic, self-starter with strong organization and planning skills and a record of accomplishment in a team environment.Occasional travel (up to 5%) may be required to support meetings with the government, design agents and other contractors at their locations, including travel to operational testing sites.
  • Hold a Secret level security clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

The referenced pay range is based on JHU APL's good faith belief at the time of posting. Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as geographic location, work experience, market conditions, education/training and skill level with consideration for internal parity. For salaried employees scheduled to work less than 40 hours per week, annual salary will be prorated based on the number of hours worked. APL may offer bonuses or other forms of compensation per internal policy and/or contractual designation. Additional compensation may be provided in the form of a sign-on bonus, relocation benefits, locality allowance or discretionary payments for exceptional performance. APL provides eligible staff with a comprehensive benefits package including retirement plans, paid time off, medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short-term disability, long-term disability, flexible spending accounts, education assistance, and training and development.
