The Opportunity: Mattel is seeking a highly experienced and strategic Corporate Tax Director to join our dynamic tax team. This key leadership role will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of U.S. direct tax operations, including federal and state income tax compliance, domestic tax provision, tax planning, and controversy management. The ideal candidate will bring deep technical expertise in domestic corporate taxation, a working knowledge of international tax concepts such as GILTI, FDII, and Subpart F, and strong experience in managing teams and cross-functional collaboration. This position reports directly to the Senior Director of Tax Operations, who leads the company's global tax provision and US tax compliance. The Corporate Tax Director will play a critical role in supporting enterprise-wide tax initiatives, ensuring accurate and timely reporting, maintaining compliance, and delivering tax insights to drive business decision-making. This is a high-impact role offering broad exposure across finance, legal, accounting, and treasury functions, as well as the opportunity to lead and mentor a talented team of tax professionals. What Your Impact Will Be:
- Tax Compliance
- Lead and manage all aspects of U.S. federal and state corporate income tax compliance, including oversight of tax return preparation, extensions, estimated payments, and information reporting.
- Supervise, mentor, and develop a team of tax professionals, including Tax Managers and Senior Tax Analysts, fostering a culture of high performance, accountability, and continuous improvement.
- Prepare and review complex tax calculations, ensuring accuracy, technical soundness, and adherence to current tax law.
- Familiar with U.S. international tax related concepts including FDII, GILTI, Subpart F and BEAT.
- Provide technical guidance and training to staff, encouraging professional growth and upskilling in federal and state tax issues.
- Identify and implement process improvements and technology enhancements to streamline tax compliance activities and reduce risk.
- Coordinate with external advisors and internal stakeholders to ensure proper compliance with reporting requirements and optimal execution of tax compliance processes.
- Tax Provision
- Lead the preparation, review, and analysis of the quarterly and annual U.S. GAAP income tax provision under ASC 740, with a focus on domestic federal and state tax matters.
- Oversee the calculation and documentation of quarterly estimates of taxable income and related cash tax forecasts, ensuring alignment with financial projections and compliance with tax accounting standards.
- Manage the identification, calculation, and proper accounting treatment of temporary and permanent differences, including book-tax differences, state apportionment factors, and tax credits.
- Analyze and communicate the impact of federal and state tax items on the company's Effective Tax Rate (ETR), including legislative changes, audit settlements, return-to-provision adjustments, and discrete items.
- Ensure accuracy in tax accounting for financial statement reporting, including deferred tax assets/liabilities, uncertain tax position and valuation allowances.
- Review and analyze foreign income tax provisions prepared by local country finance teams to ensure compliance with U.S. GAAP (ASC 740) and internal reporting requirements.
- Maintain and enhance tax provision documentation, internal workpapers, and support for external audit and SOX 404 compliance.
- Assist in implementing improvements in provision-related systems, tools, and processes to drive accuracy, scalability, and efficiency (e.g., OneSource Tax Provision, Alteryx).
- Other Responsibilities
- Conduct and support tax modeling and scenario planning to assess the impact of potential transactions or legislative changes.
- Monitor federal and state tax legislation and assess their impact on the company's compliance obligations.
- Manage tax audits and inquiries from federal and state tax authorities. Develop strategies and responses to resolve tax controversies effectively and efficiently.
- Maintain and improve internal process documentation, tax compliance calendars, and controls to ensure timely, efficient, and accurate compliance operations.
- Collaborate on the testing and validation of NextGen Finance ERP Oracle Cloud implementation.
- Act as a strategic liaison between the Tax department and cross-functional teams including Finance, Accounting, Treasury, Legal, and Business Operations, to ensure seamless information flow and integration of tax requirements into broader corporate processes.
- Communicate tax concepts effectively to both tax and non-tax audiences, including executive leadership, through clear written memos, presentations, and verbal discussions.
What We're Looking For:
- Bachelor's degree in accounting. Master's degree in business taxation preferred.
- CPA or JD/LLM preferred.
- Minimum of 12 years of relevant tax experience, including public accounting and/or corporate tax department roles.
- Deep knowledge of U.S. federal and state corporate tax laws and ASC 740 tax accounting principles.
- Familiarity with U.S. international tax concepts (GILTI, FDII, Subpart F).
- Experience with tax controversy, planning, and modeling.
- Must have strong work ethic and willingness to roll up one's sleeves to manage competing priorities and accelerated deadlines.
- Strong analytical, communication, and leadership skills.
- Proficiency with tax software and ERP systems (e.g., ONESOURCE, Corptax, Oracle cloud, etc.).
The annual base salary range for this position is between $190,000 and $235,000
