About the Job:
This position works within the Network team and reports directly to the IT Manager - Network. The Network department is responsible for supporting all communications throughout the Vulcan enterprise. The candidate filling this role will work directly with our IT Field Technicians supporting local sites, our on-premise & cloud compute & storage teams, our database team, our Information Security team, as well as our IT Business Partners.

The successful candidate must have excellent verbal and written communication skills and will be able to thrive in a corporate environment working with technical peers, architects, developers, and the business. In addition, they will be able to excel in a team-oriented environment, where they can freely share information, learn from, and teach their co-workers.

What You'll Do:

  • Core Networking Skills:
    Apply a strong understanding of TCP/IP fundamentals, including IP addressing, subnetting, and network address translation (NAT).
    Configure and troubleshoot IPSEC tunnels for secure site-to-site VPN connections, ensuring data privacy and integrity.
    Work with Generic Routing Encapsulation (GRE) tunnels for specific routing needs or overlays.
  • Local Network Device Management:
    Configure, deploy, and maintain local firewalls at various branch locations, ensuring proper security policies, VPN connectivity, and access controls are in place in coordination with our Information Security Team.
    Implement and support local network switches, including VLAN configurations, and basic routing.
    Perform regular device health checks, firmware upgrades, and configuration backups for local network equipment.
    Assist in the standardization and documentation of configurations for deployment across multiple sites.
  • Network Operations & Support:
    Provide essential support for network incidents and service requests, troubleshooting connectivity issues, and performance problems.
    Collaborate with the Service Desk and other IT teams to resolve end-user and application connectivity issues efficiently.
    Participate in the implementation of network changes and upgrades, ensuring minimal disruption to business operations.
    Proactively monitor network performance and availability to identify potential issues and proactively address them.
  • Documentation & Collaboration:
    Contribute to the creation and maintenance of accurate network documentation, including network diagrams, IP addressing schemes, and operational procedures.
    Work collaboratively within the network team, system administrators, and other IT professionals on various projects and initiatives.
    Provide clear and concise communication regarding network status, issues, and resolutions.
Qualifications

Skills You'll Need:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 5+ years of experience in network engineering or a similar role, ideally within an enterprise environment (experience supporting 100+ locations preferred).
  • Proven hands-on experience with the configuration and support of enterprise-grade firewalls (e.g., Juniper, Cisco ASA/FTD, Palo Alto, Fortinet, WatchGuard, etc.).
  • Demonstrated experience with the configuration and support of enterprise-grade switches (e.g., Juniper, Cisco Catalyst, HP Aruba, Dell, etc.).
  • Solid understanding of TCP/IP, subnetting, VLANs, and routing protocols, including BGP and OSPF.
  • Experience configuring and troubleshooting VPN technologies, including IPSEC tunnels and GRE encapsulation.
  • Knowledge of network security principles and best practices.
  • Experience with network monitoring tools (e.g., Wireshark, SolarWinds, Zabbix, Auvik).
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts clearly.
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.

Preferred Skills (but not required):

  • Industry certifications such as JNCIA, CCNA, Fortinet NSE, or equivalent.
  • Experience with wireless networking technologies.
  • Basic understanding of scripting or automation tools (e.g., Python, Ansible).
  • Experience with VoIP or unified communications systems.
  • Experience with AWS, OCI, and other cloud platforms
