Position Description:

The Medical College of Wisconsin's Department of Neurology is seeking a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to support both the Neuro ICU and Neurohospitalist Inpatient Services located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin at Froedtert Hospital.

The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) works as a member of a multidisciplinary health care team who will contribute to excellence in program administration, patient care, patient safety, research, quality improvement, and teaching.

This Neurology Department is fortunate to have several fellowship trained Neurologists specializing in stroke and both neurointensive and neurointerventional care, who can provide state-of-the-art treatments. The clinical expertise assembled in the Department of Neurology had resulted in JCAHO certification of Froedtert Hospital as the first Primary Stroke Center in Wisconsin in 2004.

The Ideal Candidate will have a passion for working with medically complex patients and bring prior experience as an APP/RN working with patients of the Neurological services, critical care or other high acuity hospital work who wants to be part of a thriving and collaborative academic practice at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW).

In this role you will:

  • Support the Neuro Critical Care and Neurohospitalist services by collaborating with a large team of Attending Physicians, Resident and Fellow Physicians, APPs, medical students, and APP students to admit, develop treatment plans, monitor effectiveness of care, interpret diagnostic results, employ pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment plans, and discharge patients with complex primary neurologic problems. Primary patient population includes stroke (hemorrhagic, ischemic, and aneurysmal), traumatic brain injury, seizure/status epilepticus, spinal cord injury, meningoencephalitis, and post op neurologic surgery.
  • Practice autonomously with Attending Physician oversight on both the Neuro Critical Care and Neurohospitalist services to provide comprehensive care through management of multiple acute medical problems, performance of bedside procedures, attention to detail regarding diagnostic results and formulation of treatment plans and coordinate complex disposition to promote continuity of care across the continuum of care.
  • Facilitates and communicates with patients, family, and staff to promote closed loop communication, inclusivity, and enhance care plan knowledge.
  • Work within a multi-disciplinary care team including comprised of Attending Physicians, Resident and Fellow Physicians, APP students and fellows, and medical students.
  • Complete comprehensive Grand Rounds on the Neuro Critical Care Service to develop patient care plans and attend didactic lectures to further clinical expertise.

Core Advanced Practice Provider Responsibilities:

  • Perform comprehensive history and physical exams, identify normal and abnormal findings, including physical, cognitive, and psychosocial status.
  • Participate in Neuro ICU Grand Rounds and work within a multiprofessional team comprised of medical students, APP students, APP fellows, Resident and Fellow Physicians and Attending Physicians.
  • Order, perform, and interpret screening and diagnostic procedures and tests, and appropriately communicate and document information.
  • Write accurate and timely consult notes, progress notes, procedure notes, and/or admission and transfer orders.
  • Develop pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical treatment plans.
  • Monitor effectiveness of plan of care.
  • Educate patients and their families on disease and treatment plans.
  • Conduct family meetings to discuss prognostication, review care plan, and coordinate patient disposition.
  • Perform procedures as trained and obtain appropriate privileging and credentialing in critical care-specific bedside procedures including arterial line and central line placement, lumbar puncture, bedside bronchoscopy, and bedside POCUS.
  • Document within the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and complete other necessary documents including Healthcare Power of Attorney activation, procedure consent, and FMLA authorization.
  • Collaborate with and consult with additional provider teams to expand upon diagnostic workup and therapeutic intervention.
  • Educate, counsel, and assist patients and families regarding current health problems, health maintenance activities and preventive behaviors.
  • Perform discharges for patients on both the Neuro ICU and Neurohospitalist service, assess medical criteria for progression beyond inpatient care, coordinate appropriate follow-up appointments, and refine medications in preparation for prescription on discharge.
  • Attend Care Coordination Rounds (CCRs) to participate in interdisciplinary discussions with therapies, Social Work, Registered Dieticians, and unit nurses to determine a patient's disposition, medical barriers, and equipment needs for discharge.
  • Complete required training and maintain key regulatory requirements, including those of the privileged institution, CMS, and the Joint Commission.
  • Participate in required classes throughout the onboarding process including MCP Orientation, completion of Froedtert Learning Center modules, Fundamentals of Critical Care Society (FCCS) courses, Mechanical Ventilation course, ECG 1 and 2 courses, Central Line Course, Lumbar Puncture Course, Suture Course, BLS/ACLS renewal, Empathy training, and Virtual Critical Care Rounds (VCCR).
  • Acquire information on the most current development and trends in the Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner field, through participation in continuing education events including educational programs, in-services, professional associates, and current literature.
  • Opportunity to attend or participate in APP and Attending and Fellow Physician-led didactic lectures hosted by the NICU and other neighboring ICUs.

Preferred Schedule:

Schedule: Flexible schedule; 12 shifts per 28-day block. Day shifts are 12-13 hours in duration and night shifts are 14 hours, divided amongst Neuro ICU and Neurohospitalist services. Average of four nights per 28-day block, remainder of shifts are days split between Neuro ICU and Neurohospitalist services. Additionally, shifts include 1-2 weekends per block and 2-3 Holidays per year on rotation. Alternative FTE and schedule positions available upon further discussion. Please note that schedule requirements are subject to change to best fit the needs of the APP cohort.

Preferred Experience: Preference for experience in Neurology or Critical Care in an inpatient setting.
