DESCRIPTION
  • Perform skilled journey level work in preventative maintenance, repairs, installation and/or replacement of on-campus refrigeration, heating and air conditioning equipment and components such as, but not limited to: split or packaged air conditioning systems or water source heat pumps from 1/8 to 10 tons in size, multi-circuit water chiller units up to 150 tons in size, centrifugal chillers up to 300 tons in size, natural gas furnaces, water source heat pumps, walk-in freezers and environmental rooms.
  • Perform troubleshooting and repair on attached electrical, electronic, pneumatic and plumbed devices and subsystems.
  • Troubleshoot and repair/replace according to National Electric Code (NEC) and Campus standards all air conditioning and refrigeration related electrical issues including electrical distribution systems, lighting, breakers, step down transformers, solenoid valves, electric motors, digital and analog control systems, printed circuit boards and thermostats.
  • Respond to Air Conditioning / Refrigeration (A/C&R) and General Electrical System trouble calls anywhere on campus and at several off-campus locations.
  • Make quick analysis of mechanical and/or electrical problems through proper troubleshooting techniques and use of various test equipment, tools and schematics.
  • Check, test, diagnose, install, maintain, upgrade, and/or repair/replace components to a wide variety of refrigeration and air conditioning equipment to ensure systems and equipment are operating properly.
  • Use proper techniques in the mechanical preservation and preventative maintenance of quality of output for A/C&R equipment and systems. Incumbents install, repair, calibrate and/or program control devices operating campus Air Conditioning, Refrigeration, & Heating (A/C-R & H) machinery.
  • Incumbents safely work in confined spaces such as overheads and mechanical spaces and work safely on and around electrical equipment including exposed conductors and wiring in voltages from 24VAC to 460VAC.
  • Follow established safety procedures.
  • Act as on-site expert resource for outside contractors performing work as directed by Facilities Management (FM).
  • Review contractor proposals and assist FM management in development of job scope documentation for the renewal, replacement, and/or upgrade of UCSD air conditioning and refrigeration equipment when needed.
  • Use various types of techniques and materials to repair leaks in water and refrigerant lines. * Effectively work with campus customers and co-workers to accomplish work with a high level of quality and efficiency.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Substantial skilled journey-level knowledge and experience in the installation, troubleshooting, service, repair and preventative maintenance of refrigeration and air conditioning systems, equipment, instrumentation and control systems.
  • Thorough practical and analytical knowledge and understanding of all types of refrigeration and air conditioning systems including: packaged or split air conditioning and water- or air- cooled heat pump systems up to 20 tons in size, multi-circuit water chillers up to 150 tons in size, and air and/or water-cooled refrigeration systems up to 4 tons in size (VRF A/C systems and Heat Pump water heaters).
  • Experience with and thorough knowledge of refrigeration cycle including principles of heat transfer, superheat, subcooling, pressure/temperature relationships, and their effect on refrigeration systems. In-depth knowledge of component use and functions including; compressors, heat exchangers, expansion devices, refrigerant pressure regulating valves, water regulating valves, refrigerant filter/dryers, packless refrigerant valves and solenoid valves.
  • Experience working within EPA regulations and laws pertaining to management of refrigerants such as: R-12, R-22, R-404A, R-410A, FR-12 (R-416A) and R-134A. Must have in-depth knowledge of refrigerant charging, recovery and evacuation requirements, techniques and procedures, use of refrigerant recovery equipment, and refrigerant tracking software.
  • Demonstrated ability to safely solder or braze component parts using acetylene, oxygen/acetylene, mapp gas or propane torches. Ability to make 100% leak tight joints on components such as: packless refrigeration valves, solenoid valves, TXV's, pressure switches, reversing valves, diaphragm type valve, compressors, etc., without destroying the integrity of the component. Ability to successfully braze dissimilar metals such as brass/copper, steel/copper.
  • In-depth knowledge of electrical theory, phasing and wiring as it applies to the refrigeration trade in voltages from 24VAC to 460VAC including but not limited to: single and three phase circuits, motors, and controllers. Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot electrical systems to the component level and service, repair or replace electrical components including motors, breakers, disconnects, transformers, contactors, relays, starters, capacitors, overloads, pressure switches, thermostats, defrost and lighting timers, circuit boards, lighting ballasts and GFCI receptacles. Proficiency in the use of electrical diagnostic tools such as meggers and multi-meters.
  • Ability to use wiring diagrams, As-Built drawings, and building plan archives to help diagnose and repair electrical and mechanical utility issues related to the function of the installed refrigeration and air conditioning systems and equipment.
  • Ability to work effectively in a service-oriented environment subject to frequently changing priorities.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, self-motivation, adaptability, tactfulness and decisiveness.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Must possess and maintain Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Universal Certification.
  • Required to work overtime as demand is needed.
  • Must possess and maintain valid CA Driver License.
  • DOJ/FBI background and DMV checks and clearances required prior to hire.
  • Ability to work in or around morgues, gross anatomy and pathological laboratories where human and animal bodies or parts thereof may be exposed to view of worker.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $105,841 - $105,841 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $50.69 - $50.69

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
