The Position

As part of our Pharma Technical Development (PTD) organization, we are committed to realizing our Pharma ambitions by bringing game-changing therapies from clinical phase I into the market to serve every patient, every day. Our core mission is to develop safe, innovative, and effective drugs using cutting-edge technologies for manufacturing processes (Drug Substance and Drug Product), clinical supply, formulation, device, packaging, and analytical development.

This role is an integral part of our Cell Culture and Bioprocess Operations (CCBO) team, which is dedicated to driving biotechnological advancements for therapeutic development. By driving automation development, digital transformation, and computational modeling in cell line development and cell culture process development workflows, you will accelerate the development of innovative therapies in Genentech's pipeline. As a member of this team, you will collaborate closely with experts in Antibody Engineering, Cell Culture Process Development, Purification Development, and Analytical Development to deliver robust processes enhanced by cutting-edge AI/ML solutions.

The Opportunity:

As a Senior Scientist, you will play a pivotal role in creating high performing CHO cell lines that express therapeutic antibodies, bispecific antibodies, and complex biologics, driving forward Genentech's clinical and commercial manufacturing processes. Additionally, you will:

  • Operate and optimize automated single-cell dispensing, imaging, high-throughput analytics, and liquid handling systems to support cell line development programs.

  • Provide strategic input on scientific direction and guide the implementation of emerging technologies and workflows in CLD.

  • Enhance data infrastructure to optimize storage, data integrity and accessibility in CLD, ensuring seamless integration with CCBO and Genentech's digitalization platforms.

  • Evaluate new and evolving AI/ML technologies to streamline CLD and process development workflows, enhance decision making, and shorten timelines.

  • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and industry best practices, preparing documentation, supporting data, and publications for regulatory submissions as needed.

Who You Are:

  • You possess a Master's degree (2+ years) or PhD (0+ years) in Chemical Engineering, Molecular Biology, Data Science or a related life sciences or engineering discipline.

  • You possess 2 or more years of relevant experience in mammalian cell line development, automation, and/or data science.

  • You possess strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, focusing on innovation and continuous improvement, and you pioneer new methods/technologies to radically simplify and improve processes.

  • You are a self-driven and intellectually curious scientist who leverages a deep understanding of scientific literature and emerging trends to independently conceive, validate, and lead projects from inception to completion.

  • You possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams.

Preferred Experience:

  • Expertise in applying machine learning, AI, and statistical modeling to biological or bioprocess data.

  • Proficiency in Python and/or R, with experience using relevant libraries like scikit-learn, TensorFlow, or PyTorch.

  • Hands-on experience with lab automation and robotic systems, such as liquid handlers and automated cell culture platforms.

  • Experience with data analysis, database management, and data visualization tools.

  • Hands-on experience working with cell images, including building ML predictive models on image-based data to analyze cell morphology, growth, and viability.

  • Knowledge of mammalian cell culture principles, recombinant protein expression, protein analytics, high-throughput screening techniques.

  • Publications or patents in the fields of cell line development and application of AI/ML technologies.

  • Prior experience in biopharma.
